Ozus' World Movie ReviewsDennis Schwartz... Ernest Borgnine as a pacifist Amish farmer plunging a pitchfork into the back of the devil character played by Lee Marvin ....
New York PressEric KohnViolent Saturday seems rooted in tradition, but as an exciting pulp story with a profound center, it manages to break all the rules.
User Reviewroger tpretty great, like sirk meets siegel, or peyton place with armed robbery. gorgeous wide screen technicolor too
User ReviewTrent RThis is as close to a Paul Thomas Anderson movie as you can get for 1955. Victor Mature wants to take his son swimming, alcoholic Richard Egan wants to bone the hot nurse in town who is being peeping tommed by the bank manager. Meanwhile 3 bank robbers come into town (Lee Marvin is one of them!) looking for the big score. Oh and Ernest Borgnine is AMISH!!!!! Final Score: Lee Marvin kills alcoholic's wife and wounds pervy bank manager, Victor Mature shotguns 2 of the 3 bank robbers and Lee Marvin gets shived OZ style with a pitchfork by Borgnine. Good times my friend, good times for all. Ironically, I watched this on a lazy sunday morning, not a violent saturday. I do still confuse Victor Mature with Tyrone Power though.
User ReviewYogesh RNow *this* is how you shoot a movie in widescreen. Check out the way the action climax is staged - a static shot held for nearly 45 seconds. What director would do that nowadays? (The shot with the train is pretty incredible too.)
User ReviewBert SClassic, little known film noir that used Bisbee as it's backdrop.
User ReviewArt SThis Film Is More Entertaining Than It Has Any Right To Be--Slick Vic, Snortin' Lee Plus Borgnine and His Pitchfork!!
User ReviewTom SSome really great colors and compositions. "Stick these in your kisser and go suck on 'em. Now go back to your mother."
User ReviewHarim KAlright but not as good as I thought it was gonna be
