Ozus' World Movie Reviews - 7/10 by Dennis SchwartzA trick ending and the sexy Diana Dors purring help make such a sour tale more bearable.
User Review - 6/10 by Paul DBy'eck! It's grim up North. This low budget British thriller stars George Baker as gambler who flees London because of his rising debts and to avoid his crediters. He retreats to his home town of Rawborough (a fictional Northern English industrial town) only to find his brother in more hot water than he is. Throw in a Femme Fatale, played by blonde bombshell Diana Dors, whose lust for money and both men causes problems leading to disastrous consequences... The real location was shot in Rotherham and the black and white photography adds to the grim surroundings creating a dull town compared to London. A competent drama is let down by George Baker whose acting style is of the Roger Moore 'raised eyebrow' school. He is probably best known for playing Inspector Wexford in the TV series The Ruth Rendell Mysteries. Diana Dors brings glamour to the film and is the main reason to watch it. Sexy. During the 1950's she was often described as the British Marilyn Monroe, even though she had been around longer. Probably the best thing to come out of Swindon. The title track is sung by pop crooner Jim Dale who would later be a staple cast member in the Carry On films. Overall, not quite a hidden gem, but still an enjoyable pot boiler.
