Ozus' World Movie Reviews - 9/10 by Dennis SchwartzIt's the kind of in-your-face political film about the class struggle where the indiscriminate viewer might feel guilty munching on popcorn.
Time Out - 4/10 by Tom MilneA little simplistic at times but acidly funny, with Godard's genius for the arresting image once more well to the fore.
User Review - 10/10 by Jim CAs good as "Weekend" and probally the best personal essay film I have ever seen. Many reviewing it are saying that it has no story and that the politics are dated. I think with some thought you can easily apply what the people are saying to today. The whole Maoist/Marxist thing is a problem though but you need to consider that 40 years ago Marx idea's still seemed plausible and Mao's problems weren't brought to light. Im personally a radical leftist, actually a communal anarchist, so im not a communist but im pretty sure back in 1972 I wouldve been. Now after seeing Communism fail and examining why im over communism. Yet, I like a lot of it's ideas, I just take the ones that are great and forget the ones that are terrible. Which Godard did, his political beliefs now are different. He has even denounced some his previous views, especially in this film. Also, its an art film. It even made fun of the fact it needed a story by adding one and then highlighting in a deadpan humor fashion again and again that it had one. Anyway, I think its a period piece and psuedo-documentry, so I think it does have a story. See this if you like movies. It is entertaining, funny and interesting.
User Review - 10/10 by Anthony IFrom the outside looking in, Godard paints for us a fascinating picture of the class struggle in France. It may seem like a PSA for communism, but so much of Godard's masterful technique of storytelling is present here, that it ends up being thoroughly entertaining. This is one of the greatest pieces of propaganda I've ever seen. It's all filmed on a brilliant, towering stage. The characters speak to us directly, as if we are being lectured. If you want a perfect example of why Godard has influenced so many modern filmmakers, take a look at this one.
User Review - 10/10 by M.Cornelis vMy favourite Godard film so far; mostly because of its difficulty, colour, politics/opinions, and, well... nuanced Brechtian self-reflexivity.
User Review - 10/10 by Alex BIt takes the words right out of my mouth, and it's as timely as ever (doesn't the factory manager uncannily resemble Sarkozy?).
User Review - 10/10 by Jacob SWow, what a film, I always wonder if Godard had an infatuation with chaos and I was right, this film together with Weekend has one of those utter chaotic mess in them. I love how Godard uses this sense of variation to paint or unpaint a picture, like how he repeats a shot in another angle and I also like how he juxtaposes various concepts to create a film more political due to cinema than on being political on film due to themes and genre. A fine film no doubt.
User Review - 10/10 by Private UThe movie itself was interesting and especially well crafted. But I actually believe that the essay in the extras menu is more compelling then the movie itself. Raising important questions of power and separation created through photography. Highly recommended essay to listen to after watching the movie.
User Review - 10/10 by Tom Wbrillant! abundant content with a familiar form both exist in 95 minutes. nice shots, nice plot, deal with alienation, relationship (you love me all?), confrontation between bourgeoisie and prolateriat, the side effect of industrialization and modernization and...how capitalism was dispersed and permeated into the society. nice setting and marvelous long shot, tracking and metaphorical use of deep focus.
