Full Plot Details

The Nazis have just invaded and are now occupying another Western European town in an Allied country, the Nazi District Commadant being Major Erich von Keller (Walter Slezak). Like other such occupied towns, the Nazis are keeping it a supposed free city in return for citizen cooperation. Some of the town's leading citizens, such as Mayor Henry Manville (Thurston Hall) and the railway station master George Lambert (George Sanders), encourage that citizen cooperation outwardly to maintain peace, while such persons are able to profit individually in being in von Keller's proverbial back pocket. Paul Martin (Kent Smith), a railway switch-man and George's best friend, has gone even further by befriending occupying German soldiers. On the other side, the school headmaster, well-respected Professor Sorel (Philip Merivale), and young schoolteacher Louise Martin (Maureen O'Hara), Paul's sister and George's fiancée, openly but quietly resist although do not totally defy Nazi orders. Louise's fellow schoolteacher, middle-aged Albert Lory (Charles Laughton), is a timid man, his self-admitted cowardice exacerbated by his overbearing mother, Emma Lory (Una O'Connor), coddling him, she in return expecting that he never leave her. Albert is secretly in love with Louise, which most in town know, it being more of a joke to them than anything as they know he will never admit such in his cowardice. Someone or some faction in town has been clandestinely printing and distributing anti-Nazi leaflets. In addition, an act of sabotage at the railway yard which was intended to thwart the Nazis resulted in two German soldiers being killed. As such, von Keller is determined to find out the person or people behind these acts. If he is unable, he will not hesitate to imprison and execute innocent people to make them examples to the townsfolk. When the supposed saboteur is discovered and shot by the Nazis, Albert gets caught in the middle, with his life on the line. In this situation, the townsfolk may get a true picture of what it means to be a coward or a hero.

Chicago Reader - 10/10 by Dave KehrJean Renoir's 1943 film has its passionate defenders; the unfortunate thing, though, is that it needs them.
Ozus' World Movie Reviews - 6/10 by Dennis SchwartzFails to be as inspirational when viewed today as it probably was during its day.
User Review - 10/10 by Ken Cthis is a great movie. Its a good look at at what it was like to have you town/country taken over . and how they did it. thansk.
User Review - 10/10 by Debbie VLoved this movie, especially the courtroom scene at the end.
User Review - 10/10 by Dellitt WI think the performances given in this film are some of the best I have ever seen. An absolutely amazing movie that teaches very well what is courage and when it is needed and that what is wrong doesn't always seem like the worst course of action while what is right may be a terribly perilous course. If we save just a few movies from each decade, this should be one of them.
User Review - 8/10 by John AThe humanity of these characters shine through in what otherwise looks like a standard piece of studio-produced war propaganda. This is due, no doubt, to the skill of the fine actors in the leads, as well as the deft direction of Renoir. Laughton and O'Hara bring a great deal of soul to their parts, while Renoir ably highlights faces as he navigates an otherwise wordy script.
User Review - 8/10 by Kathy SLoved it. It's like a big "Up Yours" to the Nazis. Was probably a bit on the controversial side too for the time that the movie was made...
User Review - 8/10 by Edward KPoor portrayal of an occupied WWII country, dreadful overacting by Una O'Connor, but they don't spoil a great story of wartime bravery.
User Review - 8/10 by Art SGreat Charles Laughton propoganda film well worth a watch.
User Review - 8/10 by Gregory WIn "This Land Is Mine," lonely schoolteacher Albert(Charles Laughton, who is superb) finds there is something more frightening than his domineering mother(Una O'Connor) when the Nazis occupy his village. As usual, his students do not respect him, even though his fellow schoolteacher Louise(Maureen O'Hara), who he has a crush on, is kind to him but then she is engaged to George(George Sanders), the manager of the railyards where her brother Paul(Kent Smith) works. Regardless, Albert and Louise follow orders and tear out pages in the history books that do not correspond with the Nazis' narrow view of history. Major von Keller(Walter Slezak) just wants everything to be business as usual but then there is a suspicious accident at the railyards... On the surface, there are certain similarities between "This Land Is Mine" and Jean Renoir's previous "Grand Illusion" about camaraderie between supposed enemies. In the six years between the films, the world had changed radically(not to mention the films are about different wars) and while the Nazis in "This Land Is Mine" might at first seem polite and urbane(von Keller certainly knows his Latin), the villagers should never view them as friends, as food shortages and censorship are only the beginning, much worse being hinted at. What Renoir has on his mind is not a recruitment film, but more a call to arms of sorts against tyranny of all shapes and sizes that displays more than one form of courage.(Ostensibly, the movie is set in France but it could be anywhere.) All of which is handled in a nuanced style and is well-filmed, especially its opening shot and two action sequences. While the movie might follow a familiar trajectory with a climactic speech, it is a perfectly eloquent speech.
