During the London Blitz of World War II, Catrin Cole is recruited by the British Ministry of Information to write scripts for propaganda films that the public will actually watch without scoffing. In the line of her new duties, Cole investigates the story of two young women who supposedly piloted a boat in the Dunkirk Evacuation. Although it proved a complete misapprehension, the story becomes the basis for a fictional film with some possible appeal. As Cole labors to write the script with her new colleagues such as Tom Buckley, veteran actor Ambrose Hilliard must accept that his days as a leading man are over as he joins the project. Together, this disparate trio must struggle against such complications such as sexism against Cole, jealous relatives, and political interference in their artistic decisions even as London endures the bombs of the enemy. In the face of those challenges, they share a hope to contribute something meaningful in this time of war and in their own lives.
Leave your thoughts about Their Finest.
Stuff.co.nzSarah WattTheir Finest is a prime example of the Brits doing humour as they do it best. All the actors seem to be having a whale of a time, and it's impossible not to feel the same way.
TheWrapAlonso DuraldeTheir Finest delivers in a way that would please the Ministry of Information: it’s rousing and emotional, there are laughs and tears, and it portrays people trying and, mostly, succeeding at being their best selves in the service of their country.
ObserverRex ReedBeautifully cast, intelligently written and a gorgeously assembled range of beautifully gauged emotions about movies and war, Their Finest is one of the best films of a still-young 2017.
Wall Street JournalJoe MorgensternOne of the smartest, funniest and most surprising movies I’ve seen in years.
Film Festival TodayChristopher Llewellyn ReedTheir Finest is that thing you didn't think you needed - yet another World War II story - yet are so happy to have found.
Movie TalkJason BestScherfig and debutant screenwriter Gabby Chiappe... make some sharp feminist points about the way men during WW2 hung on to their condescension even as they grudgingly allowed women to fill new roles.
Newport This Week (RI)Loren King"Their Finest" is a crowd-pleasing paean to making and watching movies.
Film Journal InternationalShirley SealyPart drama, part comedy, part tragic love story and a whole lot of World War II nostalgia, in the end Their Finest subliminally makes two strong statements.
The Young FolksMae AbdulbakiWhile the story loses its footing in the final third of the film, Their Finest does boast a fantastic cast that manages to keep you invested in the narrative even after it feels like it's over.
The Mail on Sunday (UK)Matthew BondClaflin, still only 30, quietly dominates every scene he is in, while Arterton is as good here as she has ever been. Better, even. But it's the supporting performances that make Their Finest such a joy for those who enjoy top-flight acting.
