He is overwhelmed by her beauty, but she will have nothing to do with him because of his pirating ways (which include taking her prized jewels). To show his noble side, he suprises her by returning the jewels, and she begins to fall for him. When the ship reaches England, Queen Elizabeth I (Dame Flora Robson) is outraged at the actions of Thorpe and demands that he quit pirating. Because he cannot do this, Thorpe is sent on a mission, and in the process, becomes a prisoner of the Spaniards. Meanwhile, Doña Maria pines for Thorpe, and when he escapes, he returns to England to uncover some deadly secrets. Exciting duels follow as Thorpe must expose the evil and win Doña Maria's heart.

DVDJournal.comMark Bourne...as much as Flynn himself, what pulls together the grand action set-pieces of swordplay ... and gushing romance is the music by Erich Wolfgang Korngold. It's Hollywood's greatest swashbuckling symphony and one of the all-time favorite movie scores.
Movie MetropolisJohn J. Puccio...romance, adventure, and intrigue; lavish costumes and sets; heroes and scoundrels aplenty; and Errol Flynn swinging from ship to ship. What more could you ask for?

User ReviewBenjamin SAwesome. A fantastic, taught adventure movie that opens with an excellent and surprisingly violent ship battle and closes with one of the best sword fights I've ever seen. Errol Flynn is great, playing an actual character in Captain Thorpe with real decision-making, as opposed to his usual smug shenanigans. It's no secret that Michael Curtiz was a fine director, but my eyes were opened here with his beautiful movements, excellent shot selection and brilliant subtext. One scene is just wonderfully directed: It begins with Thorpe seeing a woman, then cuts to Thorpe's crew discussing how he loves his ship and the sea more than he could love a woman, then after Thorpe's bumbling conversation with his leading lady, Curtiz cuts from her close-up to a wide of the ship on the open ocean. These kinds of subtle edit decisions just don't seem to happen in early, fluffy B-adventure movies. Also, the score is a rousing good time. This has everything; I can't recommend it more. A+
User ReviewJennifer HErrol Flynn is back in this gem... but where's Olivia?? Still a classic though
User ReviewNikki LThe movie score is incredible! The composer's name was Eric Wolfgang Korngold and he was a little know Austrian opera composer who moved to Hollywood and forever changed the way movies are scored.
User ReviewLucas QMy second Errol Flynn film is another classic swashbuckler, but this time Basil Rathbone is nowhere to be found. Instead we are given two villains one the sophisticated Claude Rains who doesn?t really get his hand dirty, and Henry Daniell who ends up being the challenger with the sword. The film is highflying fun from beginning sea fight to the final duel. Erich Wolfgang also composed a beautiful, thrilling seafaring score for this voyage. Michael Curtiz, the master director of this genre, does a terrific job as usual and the man Alan Hale is Flynn?s right hand man again. The supporting cast is filled with familiar faces from Captain Blood, and The Adventures of Robin Hood. I wish the compact disc I have of this film?s score had the singing, but the instrumental only soundtrack is fantastic anyway. It is great fun for everyone.
User ReviewLi EAhh, Errol Flynn as a pirate..Need I say more?
User ReviewPatricia CI simply wish people woul dstop comparing classics like this with childish, mindless garbage like Pirates of the Caribbean. Johnny Depp is a good actor, but there is no one like Flynn.
User ReviewStephen MAn awesome swashbuckling adventure with the master, Errol Flynn.
