Ozus' World Movie ReviewsDennis SchwartzNot much is convincing about the slackly told Old Dark House story.
User ReviewGregThe story of a family who moves into a house which (unbeknownst to them) was built on a graveyard. When sparky, the family terrier, digs up a skull, hilarity ensues.
User ReviewPrivate Uits really sad that this movie had a sweet comercial and gimmick but the movie itself was awful, I actually fell asleep before the end, and i never do that
User Reviewdan bI was surprised by how much I liked this flick. It won me over with the beginning, which assured me that if I were to die during the course of watching this movie, the producers of the flick would cover burial charges for me. Love it. The movie itsself, I thought, wasn't bad at all. For the most part it kept you guessing until the end, and had an interesting story. There is one scene in particular that features a ghoulish creature, which actually is frightening, because in a sort of cheesy 50s thriller like this you don't expect it at all. Also, check out the gardener. For fans of MST3K, does he remind you of Torgo? I hope I can find the MST'ing of this somewhere, but it's a fun movie with or without it.
User ReviewKendall IMany people will disagree on me liking this, I'm sure, but whatever. PLOT:When Eric (William Hudson) marries billionaress Jenni (Peggy Webber), they move into Eric's old house where he and his past wife lived before she had her accident. But what Jenni doesn't know is that Eric is hiding skulls all over the house to try and "scare" Jenni out of her fortune. Everybody begins to suspect the gardener, Mickey (Alex Nicol), who claims to still talk to Eric's ex-wife. But even stranger things start to happen and Eric wonders if the spirit of his ex-wife is restless. Was it really an accident that killed her? I'll leave you here. This plot is the kind you'd see on late-Saturday-night entertainment blocks, but it is executed very well. ACTING:Great. Every character played their part very well. The only true shiner, IMO was Peggy Webber as Jenni. SHe knows how to depict fear almost as well as Catherine Hilligoss in Carnival of Souls. SCORE:Very fitting. Very spooky and unnerving, but at times goofy, just to let you know that it is still just simple entertainment. EFFECTS:Very good for its time. Simple albiet, but good for the time and type of horror subgenre. OTHER CONTENT:I do admit, this creepy movie has its flaws. The screenplay can get kind of ridiculous. The girl is being chased by a skull at one point. A SKULL. I would just ghetto stomp that thing and that's the end. But at times with that in mind, the mood is still haunting and somewhat frightening. Besides the silly screenplay, you can tell this movie was made to be campy. In the beginning, it tells you that they'll give you a free coffin and burial if you die of fright while watching. That's camp in its glorious form. Ryan, tell me if I am wrong. Speaking of that guy, this movie had plenty of suspense in it. I had to wait on edge at times for something to happen. What this has to do with Ryan is that me and him were having a discussion on how the pacing in some movies is just supposed to be suspense. This is an example. OVERALL, a great midnight horror with well executed typical plot, great acting, creepy fitting score, effects good for its time, a somewhat ridiculous screenplay, and my introduction to suspense.
User ReviewChristopher HThe movie begins with the narrator warning the audience that the movie is so scary that they may actually die. It is cheesy and laughable as hell, which sets the tone for the rest of this super low-budget chiller. The movie has it's share of atmospheric shots, but if anybody is going to die from anything, it's laughter. This movie is a very good so-bad-it's-good experience. The film is full of laughable dialogue delivered with the utmost seriousness and the attempts at scares are hilarious. Scenes were the leading lady is screaming at a skull rolling down the stairs is something one would expect out of a parody, not a serious horror flick. The film is also filled with sloppy and choppy jump cuts that would give anybody whiplash. Sometimes the film shade changes at random points during the film. One minute it is normal black-in-white, and the next it is super white. The movie is only an hour long, so I recommend this if you are looking for some chilling atmosphere and great laughs.
User ReviewZaar Dan MST3K special - it only get 3 stars because of the hilarious commentary

User ReviewTaylor LThe Screaming Skull may be just an old B-movie. But it does a good job of waiting a while for something to happen. And although it is suprisingly enjoyable, it isn't very memorable and plays out more like an old drive-in flick. Rating: NR (I would rate it PG)
User ReviewJessica HIn need of a remake because it's not going to scare anyone who has seen movies before.
