EmanuelLevy.ComEmanuel LevyTo conform to the Code, Daniel Mann's version scaled down the raw sexuality in Tennessee Williams' play. In the original work, it was raw passion, but in the film desire is approved only if it leads to marriage.
Goatdog's MoviesMichael W. Phillips, Jr.Anna Magnani shines ... but the stagebound feel of the film, and especially some wretched overacting by Burt Lancaster, almost sink it.
User ReviewJude SCLASSIC THRILLER! THIS FILM HAS STAYED IN MY MEMEORIES SINCE I FIRST SAW IT - I WANT THIS FILM DESPERATELY BEING A TATTOOIST NOW IT STARTED ME IN THE WORLD OF ART-GREAT!!
User ReviewTana BAnna Magnani's Oscar-winning role as Serafina Delle Rose is one of my favorite performances ever by an actress. And Burt Lancaster, with his foolish haircut, sporting a wifebeater over that gorgeous body. Honey! Steamy at times, and very much a time capsule of the mid-Fifties (1955). Beautifully done. My second-favorite film ever now.
User ReviewJennifer BAnna Magnani is a tour-de-force magnet of this film, holding it together and carrying us with her as she experiences the mysterious loss of her husband and the secrets he kept from her and encounters a man a lot like him in Burt Lancaster while dealing with her teenage daughter who is ashamed of her mother. Magnani gives such a passionate performance as Seraphina della Rosia that you cannot hand anyone else that Best Actress Oscar for the year of 1955. Jo Van Fleet makes a small appearance as a snooty woman who tells Seraphina her husband's secret and Virginia Grey plays her dead husband's mistress. You cannot pass up this movie if you are a fan of Tennessee Williams.
User ReviewGary EAn all time classic with a stunning performance from Anna Magnani. the rose tattoed on the husband chess has haunted me as one of the most erotic images for years... Guess Tenesee Williams and I are alike
User ReviewCindy CAnna Magnani stern and forceful acting is wonderful in this.
User ReviewRandy TBurt Lancaster may get top billing but the real star of this film is the incomparable Anna Magnani. What a performance!
User ReviewMike KBurt gives Brando a run for the money in this
User ReviewJonathan IAnna Magnani is superb!!! But why is Burt Lancaster in this? That is the oddest bit of casting. Besides his body, he doesn't fit.
