Leave your thoughts about The Robe.
Ozus' World Movie ReviewsDennis SchwartzImportant historically as the first CinemaScope feature film.
Apollo GuideJon LapAmong the interesting qualities The Robe has to offer, its sense of social transcendence ranks among the worthiest, alongside the film's demystification of religion, and decentralization of its protagonists.
New York TimesBosley CrowtherTthe mightiness of masses and the forms of heroes have never loomed so large as they do in this studied demonstration, projected by CinemaScope. But an unwavering force of personal drama is missed in the size and the length of the show.
Old School ReviewsJohn A. Nesbitan interesting film that compels viewers to consider how they would act in such times
Antagony & EcstasyTim BraytonIt's hard to actively hate anything as deeply earnest as The Robe, but it is a long, tough sit.
Empire MagazineKim NewmanOverblown melodramatic biblical nonsense.
User ReviewGerald BA touching story, with a gorgeous Richard Burton (who is also one of the best actors) playing the lead. He and Jean Simmons make a perfect match. The story is a perfect example of standing up for your faith! All Christians should see this movie!
User ReviewSheila COne of my favorites. Love Burton and Simmons
User ReviewBob SThis movie is the second movie to be filmed in what we know as CinemaScope but the first released. This is one of the very first widescreen motion pictures and the technique although slightly different is still being used today on new movies and on most of our older favorite movies. Every serious moviegoer should watch it atleast once. The film is from 1953, and Alfred Newmans music score creates a grand matiné feel to this movie. The plot is pretty simple: A Roman tribune executes Jesus and feels quilty during the early years of Christianity. You will understand the rest, You must see this!
User ReviewC HReligious drama set in ancient Rome as Roman tribune must balance the interests of the empire with his love for a Christian woman.
