User ReviewClay BThomas Hardy was a literary genius. Let's just say this movie adaptation sizzles. The unexpected transformational ending didn't feel contrived at all. In the end, love conquers all. I would have to agree with the casting choices. Catherine Zeta-Jones really has "pagan eyes."
User ReviewAmethyst vWow kind of cheezy acting (which is surprising, considering it is Catherine Zeta Jones). Clive Owen was not looking his best, but Steven Mackintosh as the red guy was the only sensible person in the plot line. Hard to feel sympathy for anybody else really
User ReviewValerie GI really thought Catherine Zeta-Jones was Hispanic until I saw this! She really fooled me in Zorro. Who knew she was Welsh? Seriously?
User ReviewMolly RIf hadn't read the book, I would probably like this more, but it really takes liberties with changing important details of the plot. They oversimplified it. It is also very melodramatic and a bit overdone at times.
User ReviewJennifer BI'm sure people who haven't read the book will like this. Basically, they took the majority of the symbolism from the original novel out, and what they were left with was a shallow historical romance. Accents were atrocious too, and some of the plot was fiddled with if I remember rightly. My English class had great fun ripping the piss out of this film. The sad thing is, I know Zeta-Jones can act, but her talent was mysteriously absent here.
User ReviewKatie LI may have liked this movie more if I didn't have to read the book in my English class first...but I doubt it.
