Video-Reviewmaster.comSteve CrumStagey, not that well written, acted or directed (by Howard Hughes) western. More infamous than good.
EmanuelLevy.ComEmanuel LevyBy today's standards the film is naive and amateurish, but in 1943, it was one of the most scandalous features Hollywood has made due to Howard Hughes brilliant campaign to exploit Jane Russell's buxum.
Chicago ReaderJonathan RosenbaumOne of the weirdest westerns of all time, reflecting the eccentricities of its producer and credited director, Howard Hughes.
User ReviewTheMumblelover .Brilliant comedy-drama with excellent acting from the cast and imaginative directing by Mr Hughes. There is a love (male) triangle, a magnificent beauty, and the best horse in the West to watch. The Music is constant except for the last scene. Sometimes it is like a Seinfeld episode with quirks as if it were a laugh track and other times it is classical and moving. Jane Russell is drop dead gorgeous. Jack Buetel is wonderfully funny. Walter Huston is so likeable as Doc, and Thomas Mitchell as the wiley and jealous Garrett makes comical and serious situations for the players. This makes my list.
User ReviewJeremy STight story and well written Hughes not only was a good plane fella but one good producer who gave his all to his films.
User ReviewJohn DA terrible movie really, but Jane Russell heats up the screen.
User ReviewWill GA bizarre Western from Howard Hughes, and one of the most awesomely bad movies ever made.
User ReviewLewis MMost people remember this as the movie with Jane Russell's big titties, but it deserves more credit. Even though Howard Hughes is credited as director, we are told that Howard Hawks in fact directed most of it. The cast is headed by Walter Huston as Doc Holliday and Thomas Mitchell as Pat Garrett, who are both first rate, although Jack Buetel is miscast as Billy the Kid. As a historical document, it's largely fictionalized and almost worthless (the movie claims that Pat Garrett killed Doc Holliday instead of Billy the Kid) but as filmmaking, it works. The scene where Doc Holliday shoots off Billy the Kid's ear lobes is unforgettable.
User ReviewBarry LMagnifisent sizzling Western with one of the worlds most beautiful screen sirens ever to grace the limelight.
| User ReviewEric HThis film should be enjoyed for exactly what it is. It's not a traditional western, yet for someone that likes classic westerns it is quite watchable. Don't let the ridiculous detractors tell you otherwise. Hughes had talent as a director and given this film's role in the history of Hollywood thi...read mores was a BIG deal for its time.
