Movie Reviews

Journal and Courier (Lafayette, IN) - 10/10 by Bob BloomOne of Stewart's best tortured performances, showing his dark side. A must-see for Stewart buffs.
East Bay Express - 9/10 by Kelly VanceHis every move meets resistance. In this grim cavalcade of paranoia on the hoof, the verbal jabs never let up.
The Spectator - 7/10 by Virginia GrahamMuch as I deplore Mr. James Stewart's escape from his responsibilities into the lazy histrionics of the Western, I must admit that in The Naked Spur he seizes every opportunity to act with all his familiar subtlety.
CinePassion - 7/10 by Fernando F. CroceA plein air chamber piece and a masterwork of location shooting
Combustible Celluloid - 7/10 by Jeffrey M. AndersonMann never failed to deliver an astonishing ending to his Westerns, but this is one of his best.
Ozus' World Movie Reviews - 6/10 by Dennis SchwartzWonderfully intense psychological Western built around a simple story of greed and the chance to start life over again after failure.
User Review - 10/10 by Robert WThe closest Anthony Mann and James Stewart ever got to the brutalizing psychological spareness of Budd Boetticher and Randolph Scott, with Stewart as a spurned and haunted bounty hunter chasing down killer Robert Ryan for a hefty reward. But it's not that easy when Stewart takes on two wandering partners, brash soldier Ralph Meeker, and grizzled prospector Millard Mitchell (in a classic Walter Brennan-esque performance), who demand a full split, and there's the matter of the feisty woman Ryan is running with, a young Janet Leigh. Mann's use of landscape, in this case, the snow-capped Rocky Mountains, comes to suggest the mounting anxiety and desperation in the Stewart character, as his greed and need for revenge begin to cloud his judgment (nothing a slowly budding romance with Leigh can't cure), and the western ethos of what exactly a life is worth, indeed, what a redeemed soul is worth, takes on a dark, urgent precedence.
User Review - 10/10 by Grant SPerhaps the best of the remarkable series of westerns produced by the collaboration of James Stewart and director Anthony Mann, "The Naked Spur" (1953) features Mr. Stewart as far away from Frank Capra's Mr. Smith as it is possible to get. Tremendous support is provided by one of the screen's greatest villains, Robert Ryan, and cast against-type, Janet Leigh. The film also benefits from extensive location filming in the mountains of Colorado.
User Review - 10/10 by Irvin CAnthony Mann is one of those directors I'm largely ignorant of so I'm working my way through his filmography starting with this. Wow, what a film! A man hunts down wanted criminal to collect the reward money. He captures him (along with a girl) with the help of a few other characters and they try to make their way to Kansas to get the money. But things are not that easy and black & white, this Western has a lot of great, exciting scenes of adventure but it's also filled with morally ambiguous characters and surprisingly brutal and violent scenes (at least for its time) and occasionally even disturbing. Jimmy Stewart gives one of his career-best performances here, hitting every note beautifully. I will say this is probably one of my favorite Westerns and I've seen a lot of great Westerns.
