Leave your thoughts about The Naked Civil Servant.
Times (UK)Kate MuirThanks to Hurt's extraordinary performance -- soft-skinned, red-lipped and determined to fight politely for his rights -- it still seems relevant and not just an exercise in nostalgia.
Gay EssentialAlistair RyderThe Naked Civil Servant is camp and unabashedly so - but it has far more going on beneath the surface, and helped usher in more nuanced portrayals of LGBT people and culture in the years to come.
User ReviewLee Ma tour de force performance from John Hurt and well made production all round
User ReviewLinda BBased on the autobiography of Mr. Quentin Crisp, this TV Serial/ film was originally broadcast in 1975 - is still a trailblazing piece of television. Definitely worth a watch, although not for the easily offended. Awe inspiring performance by John Hurt Superb acting. Highly recommended. 5 stars without a doubt.
User ReviewAmy RExcellent production! I knew John Hurt was a great actor, but watching TNCS I realised he is much better than I thought. Absolute brilliance, his performance is pure gold.
User ReviewScott SI'd intended to see this movie for years and finally had a chance while home sick. I've always been a fan of John Hurt since his performance in The Elephant Man - he may even be better in this film. The movie focuses on the quirky British gay icon Quentin Crisp. Quentin defines the stereotype flaming homosexual and the movie provides a fascinating look at his life - how he never changed for an ignorant society but was always true to himself. I loved how the movie was directed and narrated. Outstanding film!
User ReviewBenjamin SSuperb performance by John Hurt and the film does a great job of adapting Crisp's biting novel about his life in England and the hardships he faced by just being himself. A wonderful film and very moving.
User ReviewErnest FExcellent... John Hurt is brilliant in his portrayal of a fascinating great English eccentric and humanist! Quentin Crisp is quite simply an original!
User ReviewAdam HAn incredible TV movie, based on Crisps fantastic book of the same name. This movie was a real turning point for gay people and John Hurt is faultless as Crisp. Love it!!
User ReviewPrivate UVery good. I suspected that it might have aged and become yet another ground-breaking film from the 70s that has since lost its sting - far from it. John Hurt was excellent.
