Independent on SundayQuentin CurtisThe film is a brilliantly enigmatic examination of luck, the feeling we have of some harmony or order governing our fate.
Hartford CourantMalcolm JohnsonAs it moves towards its fatalistic, circular ending, Haas' austere, matter-of-fact but unnerving portrait of strange bedfellows takes on the feeling of life in all of its isolation, hope and endless, meaningless toil.
Examiner.comAdam LippeHaas' literal-minded adaptation, something he also did effectively with the more visually opulent Angels and Insects, is helpful in directly laying out our own moral debate, where our sense of social obligation bumps up against our moralistic outrage.

User ReviewChris IIt disturbs me that this film has yet to be released on DVD. Oddly compelling and one of my favorites.

User ReviewPrivate UBest to watch this film not knowing what fate the cards hold for them.
User ReviewJames MStill not 100% sure why this is my all time favourite film, as with classics such as 12 angry men, the action contains only a handful of actors. James Spader is perfectly placed as the no hoper gambler with a confident shine only he could pull off. It is a haunting examination of two mens desire to achieve and create in the face of imprisonment, the relationship between Ptinkin and Spader is believable and intense. All the characters play with integrity and soul right down to the sean penn bit part.
User ReviewLaura FLoved this story, the kind of film you remember years later as it holds you in fascination with it's strange characters and twisted plot.
