Combustible CelluloidJeffrey M. AndersonIt feels minor next to Kong, but it's a great deal of fun.
Cinema CrazedFelix Vasquez Jr.A gritty and exciting adaptation with loads of charm to it.
MovieMartyr.comJeremy HeilmanA mindless action movie, but there's nothing inherently wrong with that.
Mountain Xpress (Asheville, NC)Ken HankeSuperior thriller shot on the King Kong jungle sets. A few truly gruesome scenes.
Cinema em CenaPablo VillaçaRealizado simultaneamente a King Kong (com o qual divide vários membros do elenco e equipe), é um filme que estabelece um clima incômodo de apreensão ainda hoje.
Movie MetropolisJohn J. PuccioThe movie is melodramatic, the acting stiff, and the music overwrought; yet I'm sure that's exactly why audiences liked the movie in the first place and why we find it so much fun today.
User ReviewAlex TA perfect adaptation of the excellent short story. My only complaint was the modified final battle between Rainsford and Zaroff, but the last shot that could only be done due to the alteration makes up for it completely.
User ReviewAnthony MA fine mix of adventure and horror on an island setting you'll recognise as the one in KING KONG. A very slim and simple story: a mad count hunts humans as prey. Surprisingly hasn't dated very much, and benefits from a creepy turn from Leslie Banks as the zealous bad guy and Fay Wray as the scream queen. I found this more graphic and macabre than the much better known DRACULA from the year before.
User ReviewCatherine RThis movie was made concurrently with "King Kong", using the same sets, the same lead actress (Fay Wray), one of the same directors (Ernest B. Schoedsack), and a much lower budget. Everyone knows that "Kong" is a great film, but this relatively unknown one is even better in my book. It's the first of many, many film adaptations of the Richard Connell story and it's still the best, although two sex-crazed European versions (Michel Lemoine's "Les week-ends mal©fiques du Comte Zaroff" and Jess Franco's "La comtesse perverse" deserve a mention).
User ReviewSimeon DClassic horror film from the maker of King Kong that expresses anyone's worst nightmare through solid performances and foggy scenery. My 8th grade teacher made us read the short story, which was fantastic, then let us watch the film. In the film there are some Hollywood drawbacks, such as a love interest and a comic relief, that make this anything less than perfect. 99/100
