Slant MagazineJaime N. ChristleyRomance becomes the irritant and, effectively, Borzage positions his romanticism as a contribution to Hollywood's anti-fascist crusade.
Ozus' World Movie ReviewsDennis SchwartzThis was the first Hollywood film to so openly and boldly cast aspersions on the Nazi oppression.
User ReviewAmber BVery powerful film about a family that is torn apart during Hitler's rise to power. The last 15 minutes are heart-wrenchingly sad.
User ReviewDave JThis movie came out while the war was still in progress and had the courage to say at least *some* of what was going on. People being persecuted and even killed because they disagreed with the politics of the moment- "non-Aryans" being sent to camps. I think that this movie is more than just a propaganda film- it presents (in a soften Hollywood way) some serious issues of that time. I think all the performances are good and the story, albeit perhaps watered down with the a love story in there, is very good. As Martin said in the movie, "I think peace is better than war."
User ReviewFrances HWatched this last night on TCM. Great movie and a good reminder, don't let your freedom go.
User ReviewDianne WRisky content for it's time. Superbly acted by a very strong cast. Was meant to awaken the US public to what was going on with the Nazis and how insidiously It started. Shows the naive majority and how hard it was to awaken them.
User ReviewTimothy JHollywood takes on the Nazis seven years after the events portrayed. Better late than never!
User ReviewAmanda MI really enjoyed this film. The story was pretty simple and black and white - as if someone created this film right after the WW2...and to my surprise, this film was made in 1940...DURING WWW2. The timing and the fact that it was based on a book, which had to have been published earlier gave incredible foresight. One will note that the Jewish ethnicity was never mentioned by name (they are just non-Arayans...which could include any number of the ethnicities persecuted by the Nazis) and the Yellow Star pin was never shown, but if you know any of this history, you can make educated guesses. Aside from that, I'm just a huge fan of Jimmy Stewart and another big fan of Margaret Sullavan. Oddly enough, they starred together in another film, "The Store on the Corner" or the "Corner Store"...made this same year. This was a record year for Jim...per Wikipedia, he made 5 films this year, including "Philadelphia Story".
User ReviewPrivate UThis is one of the best movies I've ever seen. It is the tragic story of a family in Germany at the start of Hitler's reign. I believe that it is important for people to watch this movie to see how quickly a country can change if we do not hold FIRMLY to our morals and reason.
User ReviewDarren KAnother beautiful Frank Borzage film Very powerful with great performances.
