EmanuelLevy.ComEmanuel LevyShot by master cinematographer Gregg Toland, this is one of John Ford's most visually expressive film, one that also features the young John Wayne in a strong performance
User ReviewPhenyezia OOutstanding movie John Wayne is my family favorite actor
User ReviewJeff BAs he did with Fort Apache, John Ford proves here that black-and-white cinematography can be more vivid and beautiful than any color film when in the right hands. This film is just gorgeous. The score is haunting, the cinematography is incredible, and the performances from everyone are wonderful. I LOVED this film. The sense of place is staggering on the ship, and the high contrast black-and-white visuals combined with the beautifully moody score bring the feelings of isolation in the characters to the forefront. For someone who who loves the John Ford Stock Company as much as I do, this film is a gift. You've got Duke, Ward Bond, John Qualen, Thomas Mitchell, and Barry Fitzgerald stuck on a ship together for most of the film with John Ford at the helm. It's as awesome as it sounds.
User ReviewDylan CSad there aren't more reviews on this film. It's an incredible cast, an amazing script, and a funny casting of John Wayne as a Swedish sailor named Ollie. Gregg Toland's cinematography on this film is fantastic. The whole film feels like it could have been made yesterday.
User ReviewClifford HTo learn how to shoot a film, is to watch a John Ford film. Always angularity. Always avoiding the center.
User ReviewJared DMoody breath taking cinematography of Gregg Toland make this a great film. Many of John Ford's regulars populate the cast!
