Full Plot Details

Scottish archaeologist Angus Flint discovers an odd skull amid the ruins of a convent that he is excavating. Shortly thereafter, Lady Sylvia Marsh returns to Temple House, a nearby mansion, far earlier than expected. At a party in the village, Angus meets Lord James D'Ampton, who has just inherited his family's land right next to Temple House. Angus learns of the D'Ampton Worm, a huge dragon-snake that an earlier D'Ampton killed by cutting it in half. (A catchy rock-folk song that tells the D'Ampton Worm legend.) As people begin acting strangely and disappearing over the next few days, the skull is stolen from Angus's room, and a missing person's watch is found in a cavern that was the legendary home of the D'Ampton worm. Angus and James discover that an ancient cult worshiped the worm as a god, and they theorize that the creature somehow survived its destruction, but was trapped inside the cavern. The rest of the film shows Angus, James, and Mary Trent attempting to stop Lady Marsh from freeing the creature..

Movie Reviews

Mountain Xpress (Asheville, NC) - 9/10 by Ken HankeAn almost perfect savvy blend of horror and comedy that both honors the horror genre while standing it on its head.
St. Louis Post-Dispatch - 8/10 by Harper BarnesKen Russell's phallic farce starring Hugh Grant and Peter Capaldi is drearily sexist, accidentally absurd and undeniably a stinker. But its defiant disrespect for plot and taste win me over.
ColeSmithey.com - 8/10 by Cole SmitheyGleefully over the top - Ken Russell's last good movie.
Slasherpool - 8/10 by Andreas SamuelsonFun-filled, oddball British vampire flick
Boston Globe - 8/10 by Jay CarrWorking from a forgotten Victorian thriller by Bram Stoker ("Dracula"), director Ken Russell has fashioned his most watchable film in a long while, largely by staying out of the way of the material.
Slant Magazine - 8/10 by Ed GonzalezCheap effects and gratuitous displays of nudity only heighten the film’s delirious demeanor.
Starburst - 7/10 by James EvansIf you're a Russell fan you should know what you're in for and, overall, it's a well-constructed, entertaining film.
The New York Times - 7/10 by Janet MaslinNot a worm is left unturned in Ken Russell's buoyant, mischievous and predictably overwrought new film.
Chicago Reader - 6/10 by Jonathan RosenbaumThe mad campy moments—which chiefly involve snake woman Amanda Donohoe slinking around in various stages of undress or in dominatrix outfits—are worth waiting for.
VODzilla.co - 6/10 by Anton BitelMore pantomime than horror, Ken Russell's unsurprisingly outrageous romp exposes conflicting substrates of British identity.
