Movie Reviews

Mountain Xpress (Asheville, NC) - 10/10 by Ken HankeFar and away the best of the Philo Vance pictures and perhaps the finest example of this particular kind of mystery ever made.
The Spectator - 8/10 by Charles DavyAs screen entertainment the story is rather complicated and not very strong in human interest, but it has been efficiently directed by Michael Curtiz and is on the whole well acted.
Movie Chambers - 6/10 by Paul ChambersWilliam Powell returns to the role that he originated in the late 1920′s. This is perhaps the finest of all the Vance films. It was directed by the legendary Michael Curtiz and features an early performance by Mary Astor.
User Review - 10/10 by Piratina LIf you love old movies you will love this.
User Review - 10/10 by Private UWilliam Powell could have left his slippers on my side of the bed any time, if I were alive in the 1930's!
User Review - 10/10 by Tom MArt collector and all-around scumbag Archer Coe is found dead in a room where the door and the window are both locked from the inside. He's got a gun in his hand and a bullet in his head. There's only one problem -- the bullet didn't kill him and it wasn't suicide. The police are baffled until ace-detective Philo Vance (impeccably played by William Powell) untangles the clues and tracks down the killer, with the aid of a helpful doberman. This is Michael Curtiz at the top of his game: the movie whizzes by at barely over an hour, and tells its convoluted plot with a speed, style and clarity that most filmmakers today couldn't manage in twice the running time and a hundred times the budget. Film historian William K. Everson proclaimed it a "masterpiece" and I agree with him. Although it's not nearly as well known as Powell's later "Thin Man" films, it's much better, and worth seeking out on DVD.
User Review - 10/10 by Matt BProbably the best "whodunit" Hollywood ever produced. Curtiz shows much innovation with transitions and storytelling techniques that Alfred Hitchcock would play with the following year in "The Man Who Knew Too Much". An essential mystery film told with style and suspense.
User Review - 8/10 by Kevin RA really good whodunit. I just wish there were more scenes with Mary Astor.
User Review - 8/10 by Curtis MIn my opinion one of the first decent talkie (hard to imagine a silent detective film) detective movies and my favorite of the Philo Vance detective series...the others run a little slow. The methodolgy of the murder has been stolen for a number of recent movies and TV shows so it doesn't seem as novel as it might have back in the day but its an intreguing little mystery. The subplots of dog shows and chinese dynastic art collecting are interested and the art acquiring cook who when to USC is uniquely complex for early dipictions of Asians in Hollywood but still not "politically correct" today. The complex double murder and suspects galore is typical of the period mystery but really comes together although a bit slow for the modern audience it is worth the watch just to see Powell in his dashing best. Good stuff!
