Dan Eldon, who was only 22 when he was chased down and killed by an angry mob in Somalia, was one of the youngest photographic stringers in Africa. But his journalistic work, which had appeared in Time and Newsweek, showed only a small part of his talent. Eldon excelled as an artist in his collages, which combined his photographs of Africa with paint, pastiche, pop culture images, advertising, and official documents. The Journey Is the Destination collects pages from the 17 scrapbooks that held his art. Chronicling his work from age 14 through his death at 22, this volume is startling not only in the intensity and thoughtfulness of the pages, but also in the fact that someone so young could have this kind of artistic depth and insight.

Movie Reviews

Common Sense Media - 6/10 by Renee SchonfeldBiopic of young photographer is violent and sad.
Hollywood Reporter - 4/10 by Sheri LindenFor too much of its running time, Bronwen Hughes' feature feels more like a hyper-ebullient travelogue than a biographical portrait of an extraordinary young man.
User Review - 10/10 by Elisabeth SAn absolutely beautiful biopic about the remarkably inspiring photojournalist Dan Eldon. As one whos life was changed upon discovering Dans legacy I highly encourage artists and audiences alike to take the time to watch The Journey is the Destination and see how Dan was able to change the world in his 22 years residing on it. His spirit is alive today and his story continues to inspire thousands to use art and adventure to make a difference whenever the opportunity arises. Bronwen Hughes pulls off a remarkable film mixing her imagination of the story into Dans own artwork. Its such an alive movie that Dans mother Kathy Eldon played a major hand in producing so it holds such raw and beautiful truth and testiment to his Safari way of life. (Not to mention the ultra talented cast embodied their characters- who were real life people- so beautifully and respectfully which is truly no easy feat.)
User Review - 10/10 by erica%20 sNot only did this movie inspire me, it inspires my 15 year old son (which is hard to do). It is the modern day James Dean WITH A CAUSE. I can not recommend it enough for those of all ages and walks of life. A must see.
User Review - 10/10 by Georgia RThe film captured Dan Eldon's spirit so well. The integration of his artwork into the film brings this story to life! I am so inspired. And I know everyone who sees it will be too!
User Review - 10/10 by Pat CThis film is a must see. We need more films like this one - it is beautifully shot and tells the story or journalists who risk their lives to tell stories that need to be told, of the struggles of conflict refugees in Somalia 25 years ago that heartbreakingly resembles what's happening today. It also gives us insight into the complex, creative and courageous character of Dan Eldon who continues to inspire people to life more fully. Dan calls forward a sense of our humanity while nudging us to think about how we are living our lives - or to live a "life on" as Dan would say. It leaves you with a feeling that the journey continues with us...
User Review - 10/10 by Mallory GFrom time to time we all feel insignificant but "The Journey is the Destination" demonstrates that there is a wide world out there that needs every single one of us. I believe everything Dan Eldon stood for and I really LOVED this movie!!!!!
User Review - 10/10 by Hilary CWhat a powerful and exhilarating film. Anyone familiar with the true story of Dan Eldon (and anyone who is not) will leave the theatre with a fierce determination to live life differently--more fully, more colorfully and above all, more generously.
User Review - 10/10 by Audrey EThis vibrant beautiful and moving film has not left me since I watched it. Dan's story stays with you and though painful, I am so grateful for the hope and light it has given me. I am inspired to think about all those that this story will inspire and the good it has already and will continue to create in the world.
