Movie Reviews

The Playlist - 9/10 by Drew TaylorQuite frankly, The Jeffrey Dahmer Files would have been better if it had a little more meat on its bones.
Hollywood Reporter - 9/10 by John DeForeAchieving an almost trance-like intimacy by paring its array of voices down to the essentials, Chris James Thompson's Jeff stands apart from the true-crime pack.
Capital Times (Madison, WI) - 8/10 by Rob ThomasThompson's film is something really different, a film as polite and as unnerving as its subject, one that burrows down deep into your imagination and stays there.
San Francisco Chronicle - 8/10 by David LewisIn the end, the filmmakers don't reveal a lot of new insights into Dahmer's character, or answer questions about how all these murders went unnoticed before Dahmer was apprehended. In some ways, we are left to fill in the blanks - and that can be a queasy experience.
Entertainment Weekly - 8/10 by Owen GleibermanThe Jeffrey Dahmer Files is for hardcore Dahmer obsessives only.
Slant Magazine - 8/10 by Nick McCarthyTeasing out a subversive portrait of a complex and rather subdued monster, The Jeffrey Dahmer Files unfolds with the same meticulousness exemplified by the eponymous serial killer.
Shared Darkness - 8/10 by Brent SimonAn art collage project that unnecessarily obscures its sizzle and raison d'être when a more straightforward tack would have worked better.
Los Angeles Times - 8/10 by Mark OlsenFar from closing the case, The Jeffrey Dahmer Files opens up a whole new perspective, acknowledging the banal and the baffling.
Times-Picayune - 8/10 by Mike ScottOne gets the feeling that Thompson left a lot on the table with The Jeffrey Dahmer Files, that it could have been something more, something bigger, something elaborate. And that may be true. But the film that Thompson did choose to make - one that is both simple but effective -- is fascinating in its own right.
Austin American-Statesman - 8/10 by Rebecca OnionThis approach to a true-crime documentary departs significantly from the sensational, and is all the more moving because of it.
