User ReviewJen HNever released in the theaters, this made for HBO movie is one of the best westerns I have ever seen. Cusacks is great and so is Goodman as Judge Joby Toliver. What may be over looked is John McGinley's performance. If a remember correctly also produced the movie. What really caught my eye was the realism of the movie and the cinemtography was wondeful.
User ReviewLoni BGreat movie. Surprisingly great, since it has gotten no critical notice. The story got me at a gut level. The moral characteristics were only slightly exaggerated. All the characters were inside the confines of realistic probability. I really liked this. Great acting. Great story.
User ReviewcindyI LOVED this movie and everything it stands for!!! I, also train and sell HORSES so I can COMPLETELY understand why John Cusacks character did what he did. I will not put up with anyone neglecting animals... This movie is # 3 on my top 10 list.. Everyone should have those type of values, the world would be ALOT better to be in...
User ReviewJeff MJohn Cusack does a brilliant job of portraying a complex character. As far as I'm concerned this is must see stuff.
User ReviewSamantha Esuch a good film! never even heard of it before but watched it abroad and it had me crying my eyes out, john cusack avenges the death of his wife, and ends up getting in too deep. really touching film
User ReviewLinda VHow could some one so type cast make me cry!You did a really good job here!
User ReviewAmanda HThis movie rocks. The ending is not happy, but the story is wonderful...peace of trivia...Dick Cusack, John and Joan's dad, wrote and made a cameo in this move. Dick Cusack also played the doctor in While You were Sleeping.
User ReviewHoward BTHE JACK BULL is an excellent adaptation of the Heinrich von Kleist classic tale, "Michael Kohlhaus." This story has been rendered in film in Europe, using the original time and place in the Germany of Luther's day, and in America via the novel RAG TIME. I have to wonder if the producers of RAG TIME realized that the novel they adapted was itself a retelling of the von Kleist story! Here, in THE JACK BULL von Kleist is recast in the American west of the late 19th Century. It works suburbly well, thanks to the fine cast and relentless direction. I think the sheer look of this film must have influenced the producers of DEADWOOD, it's too bad the economic use of dialog hadn't influenced them as well. There are few speeches here, and no grandstanding, and when John Goodman dresses down the local judge at the end of the film, the language is bluntly elevating, and one realizes what a terrific actor John Goodman is. In fact, Goodman's character has no real counterpart in the original story, but as the man who sets the record straight -- giving justice, finally, in the most heart-breaking manner -- he raises the tale to the level of tragedy found in the von Kleist original. Fine work here by all concerned, John Cusak and John Goodman in particular.
