Abúndio, a rich and overweight man, is at the beach with his wife Atanásia and his nubile daughter Judith, when he has taken by the «illness of Spain»: he can't take the eyes away from the ankle of Lola, a Spanish woman sitting close by. The wife sends him away, and then she represses the courtship of Judith and a young man, Mário Cabral. Later, the young man asks Abúndio's consent to marry his daughter, and the man refuses.
