Mountain Xpress (Asheville, NC)Ken HankeThe movie seems a lot better than it probably is if you stop to examine it very closely. But why on earth would you want to do that?
User ReviewOrlok WSurprisingly fun and atmospheric, though I'm not sure the resolution added up to anything.
User ReviewBill TPerfectly fine addition to the Inner Sanctum series, a series that does have it's hits and misses, but usually hits, but only slightly. This entry, with it's usual star Lon Chaney, features a hypnotist who has a participant who dies during a demonstration, and thus he believes he actually willed him to die! Unscrupulous people take advantage of this, and the whole thing evolves within, yes, a wax museum. Sometimes silly and illogical, the premise is there, but the delivery is somewhat ridiculous.
User ReviewRichard Cit's hard not to give all the inner sanctum movies at least 3 stars. As the wind and rain are lashing at your window at midnight tune in to Donald Hoffman's disembodied head telling you that even you can commit murder and you're transported to a great black & white age of mystery and suspense. this one has the lovely evelyn ankers and a wax museum, great.
User ReviewKevin NOne of the better installments in Universal's "Inner Sanctum" franchise, 'The Frozen Ghost' features some surprisingly engaging editing, transforming an ordinary cheap murder mystery story into an entertaining and stylish genre film. Expressionistic lighting and staging lead to some interesting compositions, and some of the sets are effectively creepy. The story concerns a hypnotist named Alex Gregor, or "Gregor the Great", played by Lon Chaney Jr. (the common thread through the series). In the opening scene, a man frustrates Gregor during his act and Gregor wills him to death under his breath. The man does indeed die, though there is no evidence that it was Gregor's doing. Haunted by guilt, he goes into hiding with a friend at her wax museum, but the shadowy pace hides some dark secrets of its own and is no place for Gregor's rehabilitation. I like this story, I like director's Harold Young's creative direction, and Chaney is good as he always is. This is a far cry from high art, but for those looking for good B-movie matinee fare, look no further than this.
User ReviewTristan DThe usual Inner Sanctum formula is in place with this fourth outing but they manage to change things up a bit with the wax museum setting. Martin Kosleck gives the most interesting performance as the mad surgeon, Rudi.
User ReviewMichael GThe Frozen Ghost, 4th in Universal's Inner Sanctum series is really just more of the same as its predecessors--a little style and even less substance. This time, Lon Chaney Jr. plays a mentalist who takes refuge at a friend's wax museum after one of his stage shows goes awry. Drama follows, danger ensues and there's really not much more to it than that. The title's vaguely appropriate but mostly dumb, the acting's pretty stiff and the direction's a diluted version of the series' previous entries. The Frozen Ghost is barely an hour long and it took me 3 viewings to finally make it all the way through. Yeah, it's dull too...
