Rebellious and uninhibited Reshma lives an impoverished lifestyle with her mother, Ratnamma, in 1980s South India. She is an ardent fan of film actor, Suryakant, and her one ambition in life is to meet and act with him. She runs away to Madras, and like, hundreds of young women, lines up outside Jupiter Studios to try and get noticed. With her plain, next-door-girl looks, she gets ignored but as fate could have it she is given a chance to play a minor role after she manages to sneak into the studios. The role exploits her as a sex symbol, driving males to the cinema houses to absorb her movements and beauty. Virtually overnight she, now renamed Silk, becomes a sensation, and together with the aging superstar, Suryakant, the one she had always fantasized about, she sizzles the silver screen with her sex appeal. Suryakant's brother, Ramakant, an author, is smitten by her - so much so that he would like her to opt out of movies altogether, so that he could marry her. But the rebellious woman that she is, jeopardizes her chance of impressing his parents - by challenging the upcoming siren, Shakila, to a competition. And it is this move that will bring about even more changes in her life.

Movie Reviews

ScreenAnarchy - 8/10 by J HurtadoThis film offers big laughs, fantastic spectacle, big emotions, and a powerhouse performance from a brave and exciting actress.
TheMovieReport.com - 8/10 by Michael DequinaVidya Balan attacks the role with the same ferocity her character nakedly (in more ways than one) pursues fame at any cost, commanding and compelling when Silk is at her most vain, heartbreaking when she falls into increasingly desperate self-destruction.
Reuters - 8/10 by Shilpa JamkhandikarLike its subject, the tone of Luthria's movie is slightly over-the top and tends to caricaturize certain characters, but the lead performance is so all-encompassing that you don't mind these flaws.
User Review - 10/10 by Devan PI dare anyone to watch this absolutely engaging and intelligent offering from the Indian film industry - that is, if you have the stomach to descend down the murky rabbit hole of that industry. And in a modern era where the line has well and truly been blurred between models and so-called actresses, Vidya Balan puts in an acting powerhouse to restore faith in those of us who still love the medium of true cinema. Ooh La La...
User Review - 10/10 by Sathi SVidya Balan - entertainment, entertainment, entertainment, & she definitely was the entertainment in this flick. It's obviously not the typical Indian film that one can watch with the whole extended family but I liked that it showed the reality of not only Silk's (South Indian - film star) life but that of many others who don't get to be the IT girl in but settle for roles like these. They're judged by society, however the same society that judges them promotes them and their role by watching these types of movies. Emraan Hasmi was superb in his role. The arrogant artsy director who hates the Silk type and wants more for the industry and ultimately he wins but loses. Naseeruddin Shah played his part well, a little too well. He definitely depicted that sleezy, aging superstar who lives two lives; one with his female costars and the other with his presentable, respected wife.
User Review - 10/10 by Isura SWonderful portrayal of a hypocritical issue. 5 stars.
User Review - 10/10 by Marnie ZThe "Movie Info" is a bit lacking. This is a really good movie.
User Review - 10/10 by Impy KLoved the movie!!! Vidya has done an amazing work.....! Another milestone achieved by this Best Actor! Superhit movie!
User Review - 8/10 by Jen AI actually like it. To portray the dramatic life of Silk Smitha in 2.5hrs, Vidya Balan did well. The number "Ooh La La" rings in my head for a long time after watching. :)
User Review - 8/10 by Sophia QThe moment I heard about this film, I was intrigued. Vidya Balan & Emraan Hashmi? Sounds good. When the posters released, I was fascinated. When the promos and music released, I was obsessed. When I read the movie reviews, I was excited. When I read the audience reviews....I lowered my expectations. Did the movie live up to my lowered expectations? Yes. Yes. Yes. And Yes. This movie lived up to my ORIGINAL expectations. Honestly, I don't know what movie others were watching, but the movie I just finished told a tale of a driven, spirited woman who ignored the world around her and lived her life the way she thought fit; however, when she allowed herself that moment to think of what others thought of her, she brought about her own downfall. It was dirty, magical and tragic. The first half of the movie brought a smile to my face with Silk's antics, while the second half kept me interested to see what she would do next. I didn't feel the movie had a dull, dry moment. There was only one scene that I would call vulgar - the scene with Silk rolling around in her red lingerie. That was slightly obscene - but it got the point across. Haha. Vidya Balan as Silk was phenomenal. For those who are saying her performance is overrated, who are we rating these days? She was fabulous. She became this character and, in my opinion, did so while still looking pretty and retaining her class. She did not come across as vulgar to me (barring the one red lingerie scene, which made me uncomfortable with the sounds). This woman has proved with this movie that she can act the pants off most of the actresses in Bollywood today (and actors). She was bubbly in the first half and angst-ridden in the second. Really, truly fabulous. The men were all good. Naseeruddin Shah played the role of a self-absorbed, perverted old star with ease. It was not a complicated role, but he acted well. Tusshar Kapoor was cute in his role. It was probably the shortest role out of the 3 actors in the film. He gave it his best though and made an impression. Emraan Hashmi was Emraan Hashmi. He can do wrong, but when he does it right, he does it so right. I have always been a through-and-through fan and he has done me proud with this role. He has shown that he can take a smaller, less prominent role and make it worthwhile. After the movie is over, you remember two things - Silk's angst and Silk & Abraham's relationship. Vidya & Emraan have real chemistry and I hope good directors jump on this jodi and soon. Emraan was impressive. The songs were all great, namely "Oo La La" and "Ishq Sufiyana.". I wish "Twinkle Twinkle" had been in the movie though, along with Sunidhi's version of Ishq Sufiyana. I also wish there had been more focus on the love story. But these are small, insignificant flaws. I'm a fan. I'll be buying this movie once it releases on blu ray. This movie is worthy of every award it receives this year. Kudos to Ekta Kapoor and everyone involved with this movie.
