Chicago Sun-TimesRoger EbertThe problem is that the material's stretched too thin. There's not enough here to fill a feature-length film.
Chicago ReaderJ.R. JonesSome of the illustrious cast members were on their way up (John Travolta), but most of them were on their way down (Eddie Albert, Ida Lupino, Keenan Wynn).
The New York TimesRichard EderThe Devil's Rain is ostensibly a horror film, but it barely manages to be a horror. The quality of writing, acting and direction give a general and routine witlessness to this movie.
User ReviewBlais EUltra high- camp occult- horror film with a decidedly menacing & animated perf delivered by the always-interesting Ernie Borgnine as the vicious leader of a murderous Devil-worshipping cult in Arizona. Perpetually hammy William Shatner & Tom Skeritt try to thwart their plans, with questionable results. Featuring Hollywood Golden-Agers Eddie Albert, Ida Lupino, & Keenan Wynn, as well as a fart-and-you'll-miss-him very early appearance by John Travolta as one of the cultists. The unfathomably-bizarre ending is especially memorable, as Ernie morphs into an ugly, pug-nosed, Phyllis Diller- coiffed, ram-horned demon, and his loyal followers melt into percolating puddles of multi-colored wax-muck. An unbelievably-fun cheese-fest!
User ReviewR.John XI'm honestly shocked and saddened by the lack of recognition and appreciation this extremely creepy movie seems to get. I really love it and readily defend it. This should absolutely be a cult classic, but instead it seems to remain relatively unknown. The story deals with a Satanic cult in a desecrated church in an abandoned ghost town. Add to that a legendary cast: William Shatner and Tom Skerritt share top billing with a devilish Ernest Borgnine, and John Travolta (then unknown) pops up as a blink-and-you'll miss-him baddie. The titular Devil's Rain itself is literal rain which fricking MELTS PEOPLE'S FACES OFF in a stew of bubbly goop: gruesomely; nightmarishly, and even more creepy for its rough-edged 70's cinematography. If this sounds even remotely interesting, check out the gloriously nutso trailer (which by today's standards would definitely be a Red-Band) and laugh at the woefully inadequate PG rating.
User ReviewChris .CLASSIC CRAP!!! A must have for any stinky cheese collection! How can you go wrong with Ernest Borgnine in a goat suit?
User ReviewRichard AI saw this movie when I was about 9 and it scared the crap out of me (mostly it was the black, empty spaces for eyes...). Then, I saw it again for the first time when I was an adult when my husband and I got satelite TV...they played it at 1am, and I still found it to be very scary (be it a B-movie or whatever, if I really get into a movie, I don't care how good or bad the special effects are). It still remains as one of my favourite horror movies, and Ernest Borgnine is absolutely awesome in this movie!
User ReviewMichael JShirtless Bill Shatner at his very best. Johnny Travolta makes his big screen debut and it's a miracle to behold. Borgnine proves he's the finest of his generation in this 1975 magnum opus from director Robert Fuest.
User ReviewVladdy TroutFreaky and delicious 70s horror. Lots of cool melting effects. Shatner after Star Trek but before TJ Hooker. Awesome!
User ReviewSarah CThe first horror movie I ever saw, this film holds a special place in my heart and probably gets a couple of bonus stars as a consequence. B movie horror at its finest, it combines a whole bunch of special effects that seemed to be going spare, a star-studded cast and an incomprehensible plot, creating a fantasmagorical satanic thriller. Shatner is clearly warming up for The Wrath of Khan by this stage and Ernest Borgnine looks extremely disturbing as a goat. Excellent fun.
