Full Plot Details

Born January 22, 1961, the late Daniel Johnston began expressing himself through art as a child while doctors struggled to accurately diagnose his unusual behavior. In addition to drawing prolifically, he began using a boombox record curiously stirring songs to cassette tape in high school. Following his brother to Texas, he eventually landed in Austin, working unskilled jobs while continuing to record and self-distribute music to friends and friendly strangers. It was clear to everyone that Daniel was not a typical artist - a disquieting innocence, with references to both light and dark spiritual forces, were evident throughout his work. It was this distinctive voice that compelled local musicians to share his art beyond Austin's city limits, culminating in respected indie musicians like Tom Waits, Beck, and Wilco to either record his songs or reach out to collaborate. Four years in the making, THE DEVIL AND DANIEL JOHNSTON honors the complex artistry of Daniel Johnston while exploring how bipolar disorder and schizophrenia distorted his behavior and informed his haunting work.

Movie Reviews

Montreal Film Journal - 10/10 by Kevin N. LaforestBy far the best film of this first half of 2006.
BBC.com - 10/10 by Matt McNallyRock 'n' roll's capacity for recycling legend means the stories of Johnston's life, and the way in which they're told, could easily fall into cliché. Instead they are original, engrossing and sometimes heartbreaking.
San Francisco Chronicle - 10/10 by Joel SelvinA one-of-a-kind cinematic experience. This musician may not be a genius along the lines of Brain Wilson, as Feuerzeig claims, but Johnston has a knack for revealing innermost thoughts in an offhand way that is eerie and uncanny.
Sympatico.ca - 10/10 by Angela BaldassarreDemonic and riveting, but I'm still not a fan.
Baltimore Sun - 10/10 by Michael SragowThe offhand wit and casual self-revelation of Johnston's best words draw you deeper into the mysteries of his character. Feuerzeig is a music-lover to his bones.
New York Daily News - 10/10 by Elizabeth WeitzmanFeuerzeig's film - everything a good documentary should be - is a story of family, friendship, art and fame, as seen through the prisms of exceptional beauty and deepest pain.
Monsters and Critics - 9/10 by Ron WilkinsonAn inside look at the weird world of the cult hero of grunge rock who is, well, weird.
TV Guide Magazine - 9/10 by Ken FoxThe casual listener is easily put off, but by the end of the film, even a newcomer can see the magic that made fans of Kurt Cobain and Sonic Youth and led the estimable Yo La Tengo, Pearl Jam and Wilco to cover Johnston's remarkable body of work.
Los Angeles Daily News - 9/10 by Bob StraussAs for the serious fans of his work, well, maybe I'm not getting something, but they seem like the craziest people in the movie.
The A.V. Club - 9/10 by Noel MurrayBy the time Feuerzeig gets to his final shot--an artful portrait of Johnston's parents, with their son looming over them like a curse--he's emerged with the most harrowing and aesthetically keen portrait of madness and artistic inspiration since "Crumb."
