Movie Reviews

San Francisco Chronicle - 10/10 by Mick LaSalleThe Details has a light tone, but it's anything but light in purpose. It's committed and passionate, one of the most perceptive and morally persuasive movies of 2012.
Seattle Times - 8/10 by John HartlAs the title suggests, it's all in the details, which writer-director Estes provides in large if not always convincing doses.
Entertainment Weekly - 8/10 by Lisa SchwarzbaumTobey Maguire's characteristic placidity makes a fine mask for a man who is thoroughly awful.
ColeSmithey.com - 8/10 by Cole SmitheyJacob Aaron Estes has made a plucky movie that challenges its audience to examine their own less than ethical behaviors. Just as it is in life, it's all fun and games until someone looses their household.
Detroit News - 8/10 by Tom LongIt's hard to make a fine actress like Laura Linney look off-key and shrill, but "The Details" manages to do just that. It's hardly an accomplishment.
NPR - 7/10 by Joel ArnoldIn The Details' finest moments, writer-director Jacob Aaron Estes exerts a precise control over tone using sound and performance; in its worst moments, the score and actors overcompensate for weak material. Those elements let Estes get away with often-indulgent writing, throwing up whole scenes that don't add texture or conflict.
Village Voice - 7/10 by Alan ScherstuhlTop-shelf cast, headed by Tobey Maguire, slips into familiar grooves of adultery, lies, blackmail, and pet poisoning, it's the spectacular blow-ups and dressing-downs that make this such a nervy pleasure.
The New York Times - 7/10 by Stephen HoldenInstead of turning soft and squishy, this examination of karma gets tougher as it goes along. Its refusal to settle into a cozy niche may be commercially disastrous, but I take it as a sign of integrity.
Flick Filosopher - 7/10 by MaryAnn JohansonThe wacky is forced and unfunny and the misery is nowhere near wretched enough.
Los Angeles Times - 7/10 by Gary GoldsteinIt all adds up to create a dicey morality tale that's as improbable as it is strangely believable.
