Monthly Film BulletinMFB CriticsOne is grateful nowadays for a film which does not attempt to depict war as anything but a tragic and bloody experience, and it is this quality which gives the production its final power to move.
User Reviewcli oJack Hawkins at his best. A movie that could only work in B&W. This a superb war drama and conveys (I assume) what it was really like for RN & MN personnel during the war.
User ReviewTina TOne of the best war films.. Jack Hawkins and Donald sinden really work well together . Sterling actors throughout - 'snorkers' anyone!!
User ReviewSean MOne of the best naval WWII movies out there. If your expecting midway I think this will be not your type of film. More about characters and the real cost of war. It a film about protecting convoys duty on their Atlantic crossings. It was a film that took me years to watch simply because I just caught pieces of it for one reason or another
User ReviewTony Cyea def one of my top ten war film and ive seen and got most truly inspiring on the same par as the great escape and sink the bismarck.
User ReviewMark ROne of the best war films ever. A strong British cast led by Jack Hawkins puts across the real and often grim story of the Battle of the Atlantic in a personal way without glamour. Based on Nicholas Monsarrat's best seller (he himself served in corvettes). Agree the facebook synopsis isn't quite correct, I think the reviewer has mistaken part of the plot with "The enemy below" starring Robert Mitchum?

User ReviewLyle ROne of the greatest war movies ever made and certainly one of the most realistic. Much of the terminology, equipment and action performed by the actors is spot on, yet the story conveys the harshness of serving in The Battle of the Atlantic without any of the rah-rah patriotism or propaganda. Wonderfully done.
User ReviewEddie SThe very best Brit wartime naval action. As the bumf says, the real enemy is the grim North Atlantic.
User ReviewPhil WThe best British War Film bar none. Better than 'In Which We Serve', tense, exciting and moving at the same time. Some of the dialogue is exceptional.
