Full Plot Details

After the death of her husband, the mother of Julie, Jack, Sue and Tom begins to suffer from an unidentified illness. Rather than going to hospital, and letting the authorities foster her children, she opens a bank account for them so they can be financially self-sufficient and will be able to avoid being taken into care by the authorities. After she dies, the 2 older siblings decide to hide her body in the basement. Soon they begin to suffer, both the emotional strains and pressures of their situation, as well as the changes which happen during adolescence.

Independent on Sunday - 8/10 by Quentin CurtisBirkin, who wrote the film as well as directed it, has stuck close to the original -- the sort of spare, atmospheric novella that adapts well to the screen.

User Review - 10/10 by Mina .I remember that when reading the book, I was really shocked by the unusual frankness...by the unusual happenings, feelings, or should i call them...not something that a society would approve of. Two teenagers are left with their two younger siblings alone after their mother dies, only a little while their father has also departed. They decide to bury her body in cement, in an iron file cabinet, left down in the basement. It is clearly that the kids are trying to live the drama by their own methods: the youngest starts dressing like a girl, and plays with his best friend being his mom and dad, and also drinks from the feeding bottle. His sister keeps a diary where she addresses her dead mother, telling her what has been happening. her bigger brother stops washing and keeps being obsessed by his body, has his own place to retire, smoke and read from the book he got for his birthday. Their bigger sister starts dating an overly older business man, that eventually rats on them.

'it takes two pints of blood to replace- each time you 'do that'' his mother told jack after she'd found him wanking. incest rules the roost.
