Dorothy, her maid, aware of her mistress's heartlessness, secretly pities the husband. Denton invites the Randalls to a party given in honor of his children. Mrs. Randall sees her husband's love of children assert itself during the affair. Infuriated, the woman returns home. As time passes, Randall sees the difference in the characters of his wife and her maid. The former, wearied with domestic life, longs for the bright lights of her former career. She suddenly decides to return to the stage. Despite her husband's pleas, Mrs. Randall departs. Just before she goes, the woman discharges Dorothy while in a fit of temper. Randall, however, reemploys the girl. The following morning, bitterly thinking of the disappointment his marriage has caused him, Randall picks up a newspaper. The flaring headlines, telling of a frightful railroad wreck, rivet his attention. At the head of the list of the dead is the name "Mrs. George Randall.
