It's the 1870s in the small Russian town of Ryevsk. The lusty Fyodor Karamazov, a bit of a cad who has lived off the wealth of his long deceased first wife, has never loved any of his four now adult sons, including his illegitimate epileptic son, Pavel Smerdjakov, who he employs as his personal servant. The four brothers were largely raised apart. Alexi, the youngest, is the only one who loves his father, but does so as he loves all mankind in his piety. Second eldest Ivan, who lives most of the time in Moscow working in the newspaper business, is the emotionally troubled one. And the eldest Dmitri, an army lieutenant and the only offspring on Fyodor's first wife, knows that he is most like their father, and as such has the greatest animosity toward him in their mutual depravity. Dmitri has knowingly racked up gambling debts in waiting for what he considers his fair share of his mother's wealth, something that Fyodor will not willingly give to him but will loan on a request by request basis which now does not include paying for Dmitri's gambling debts. As a matter of circumstance, Dmitri gets engaged to a virtuous young woman named Katya, for both as a matter of honor, although Katya mistakes that honor for love. The situation between all members of the Karamazov family becomes more complex when Fyodor takes measures to make it more difficult for Dmitri, who meets tavern owner Grushenka in the process. Dmitri falls in love with Grushenka and eventually wants to become an honorable man in all aspects of his life for her, their relationship despite Fyodor himself having asked her previously to marry him.

Movie Reviews

Variety - 8/10 by Variety StaffBold handling of crude unbridled passion, of violently conflicting ideas, and of earthy humor makes up The Brothers Karamazov.
Chicago Reader - 7/10 by Jonathan RosenbaumWhile not as terrible as his subsequent adaptation of Lord Jim, this 1958 Hollywoodization of the Dostoyevsky novel by writer-director Richard Brooks is pretty grotesque all the same.
Ozus' World Movie Reviews - 6/10 by Dennis SchwartzI would avoid this film as readily as one avoids Siberia.
User Review - 10/10 by adrienne kI first saw this movie in my youth and was mesmorised by Yul Brynner's deliverey of yet another regal commanding perfomance as Dimitri. William Shatner pleasantly surprised me as Alexi Karamazov who is a monk & Dimitri's brother, which must of been hard to do consudering how powerful an actor Yul Brynner was. The cast were fantastic at portraying a family who encompass secrets, conscience, murder, honor, love, faith, doubt, innocence, forgiveness, and redemption in 19th Centuary Russia. A great all time cast & movie you can watch time & time again!
User Review - 10/10 by Steve SWilliam Shatner as a young idealistic novice monk..... Need I say more?
User Review - 10/10 by Rafael CThe Brothers Karamazov is a mesmerizing film. It is about the tensions that about in the Karamazov family. Yul Brynner and Maria Schell give excellent performances. The screenplay is well written. Richard Brooks did a great job directing this movie. I enjoyed watching this motion picture because of the drama. The Brothers Karamazov is a must see.
User Review - 10/10 by Susan MDid not think Brynner could do it, but he does it. A great film that is faithful to the written masterpiece. Maria Schell, I adore you, too.
User Review - 10/10 by tamara sYul Brynner rocks cos he is a Russian (Yuli Borisovich Bryner) but not American so actually he plays his own story and folk. But American shooted well too...
User Review - 8/10 by George RAn all-star cast featuring young actors Richard Basehart and William Shatner as well some current screen favorites of the time -- Yul Brynner, Claire Bloom, Maria Schelll. Another member of the cast, towheaded child actor Miko Oscard, I met about 10 years ago in a suburb of Ventura County. This was one of his two best roles: Ilyusha. All the acting in this movie is excellent.
User Review - 8/10 by Christopher BSix excellent actors working under Mr. Brooks. While not fully appreciating the original novel, this is decent enough for Hollywood. Though if you are looking for great acting, focus on Cobb, Schell, Bloom, Stehli, & Opatoshu. The others are just minor variations of the characters they usually perform.
