Out of the PastRaquel StecherFor fans of Out of the Past (1947), seeing Mitchum and Greer together again, albeit in a very different type of movie, is a treat. It's not a great film but it's enjoyable viewing for Noirvember.
Ozus' World Movie ReviewsDennis SchwartzIn this taut cat-and-mouse tale, all concerned are in top form.
Combustible CelluloidJeffrey M. AndersonSiegel packs lots of chases and action into 72 minutes, with a great ending.
User ReviewGreg WBefore Don Siegel directed classics such as Dirty Harry and Charley Varrick,he was responsible for some of the more interesting Film Noirs of the late 40s and 50s. This was his second feature and it re teams Robert Mitchum and Jane Greer who had worked on the classic Out Of The Past. This film may not be as good as that movie, but its tone is lighter and it allows us to see some humour in Mitchum as a leading man. He plays Duke Halliday an army soldier wrongly accused of stealing an army payroll. During his quest to find the man who actually did the job he runs into the villians scorned lover Joan played by Greer. They form an unlikely alliance and slowly begin to fall in love as the pursuit reaches its end. Hot on there trail is Captain Blake played by genre stalwart William Bendix who is determined to track his man down. The film is of course thrilling with a great chase across Mexico and of course the final denoument and double cross all present, but the film is also funny in parts as Mitchum struggles to communicate with the locals . Short and sweet too at 72 minutes ,but Siegel is of course a master director so you never feel short changed.
User ReviewBlake PMonday, June 27, 2011 (1949) The Big Steal THRILLER One of few early films directed by film veteran Don Siegal (Dirty Harry, Invasion of the Body Snatchers), which can just be as relevent if it were to be made now, which centers on loot stolen from an US army base with Lt investigator Robert Mitchum as Lt Duke Halliday having to go through Mexico to retrieve it! Movie cuts to the chase and is never boring, as soon as the star gets off the ship, chasing someone with a new interesting revelation as the film progressses! Strong 3 out of 4 stars
User ReviewPatryk CA road trip noir that offers some astounding visuals and a few gripping scenes, but nevertheless stays somewhere in the middle of the list in this particular category. What's crucial to point out is the fact that even though, for most of the time, the story flaws with time without any significant turns, yet in the ending it offers such a twist that it simply is more surprising than one might expect. Don Siegel created a very compelling movie about a man, who chases a guy who framed him for a robbery, and who is also chased by the law. A cat-and-mouse tale with a very interesting characters. And it all happens in the hot and sweaty outposts of Mexico. Worth a watch.
User ReviewRichard CLoose film noir but highly enjoyable.Again great black and white photography and the chemistry between Mitchum and Greer is super.
User ReviewIlsa LA fresh and clever take on a familiar storyline and terrific performances from the well chosen cast add interest to this solid noir, Unfortunately, the print I viewed was colorized which I found downright annoying.
User ReviewAllan CNot quite film noir, but a fun black & white crime film from director Don Siegel and writer Daniel Mainwaring, who wrote the quintessential noir film, "Out if the Past," which also starred Robert Mitchum and Jane Greer, who are the leads here as well. It's a caper story involving Mitchum chasing down a stolen army payroll in Mexico, with the underrated William Bendix hot on his trail, thinking Mitchum stole the money. Greer then also gets caught up in the chase. The film is much more breezy compared to "Out of the Past," so certainly don't expect anything similar in this film, but do expect a great cast, tight direction, and a crackerjack script. Overall it's a terrifically fun and under appreciated film.
User ReviewAj VA sort of round-about chase movie with an interesting cast and story. I liked it.
