Set in post-nuclear-holocaust England, where a handful of bizarre characters struggle on with their lives in the ruins, amongst endless heaps of ash, piles of broken crockery and brick, muddy plains, and heaps of dentures and old boots. Patriotically singing "God Save Mrs. Ethel Shroake, Long Live Mrs. Ethel Shroake", they wander through this surrealistic landscape, forever being warned by the police to "keep moving", and prone to the occasional mutation into a parrot, cupboard, or even, yes, a bed sitting room with "No Wogs" scrawled in the grime on its windows. In particular, this story revolves around the odd "love story" of a girl who lives with her parents in one compartment of a London Underground train, the commuter in the next compartment, and the doctor they meet after returning above ground in search of a nurse for the heavily pregnant girl.

Ozus' World Movie ReviewsDennis SchwartzWith over a thousand gags that had only a handful work.
User ReviewSam GSheer deranged genius. Spike Milligan, I salute you!
User ReviewChris MIts probably hard to watch if you arn't British and incredibly high but I've fufilled both criteria every time Ive seen it so this goes straight in my top ten!
User ReviewNick MThis is the best film ever. Even beats 200 Motels.
User ReviewStephen CSimply Glorious and off beat satire from master director Richard Lester. Based on a playby John Antrobus and Spike Milligan, you know your in for a treat when the cast are listed in order of height. The premise is simple 20 people have survived the nuclear incident nad now wonder the wasteland of London doing all kinds of rather bizzare things. The cast is simply marvellous nwith Michael Horden as the only doctor left.Spike Milligain as his usual trampy jobsworth,Marty Feldman as a demented nurse,Harry Secombe as an even more demented survivor ,Roy Kinnear a s a man obssesed with rubber and pete and Dud as two policeman. And of course Ralph Richardson who turns into the titled Bed Sitting Room. Lesters visual eye never flags with his ruined London being very very striking. Add to this some utterly memorable and very funny dialogue and you have one of the directors greater and funnier works
User ReviewBill TIt's one of those films you either love or hate. Personally, I love it! Appart from the strong feeling that you are watching a film written by Monty Python, produced by Fellini and directed by Bunuel, The Bed Sitting Room will also make you feel smarter than those who think Scary Movie 1,2,3,4 are funny. It satirizes everything; television, politics, royal family, country, state, marriage, health system, family life, weapons of mass destruction. It's without a doubt one of Lester's best moments.
User ReviewCaitlin FA brilliant film, although at times I did find it very confusing (I mean when did everyone start mutating into furniture?) It is just so hilarious and cleverly written, with an almost Goon-ish feel to it, that you can clearly tell Spike Milligan was in on the script writing, (it was based on a play by him.) Some really great performances as well (gotta love Dudley's barking.. or whatever he was doing.)
User ReviewTrent RExceptional post-apocalyptic social satire with key Goons minus Sellers, Pete & Dud, a fresh young Marty Feldman in drag, and much of the heights of British cinema capering about real post-industrial waste in rags. Richard Lester, riding high after Petulia, willfully drives his career firmly into the ground with this small masterpiece. Visually fascinating, this consistently defies it's stage origins and ends with as much absurd optimism as it has absurd pessimism throughout.
User ReviewMArk BI've occasionally heard this referred to as a counterpoint to 2001: A Space Odyssey... and you know, there may well be something in that... A wild, unremittingly weird, quintessentially British and curiously profound post-apolalyptic comedy drama featuring virtually every British character actor from the second half of the 60s. So why in God's name isn't it available on DVD?
