Chicago ReaderJonathan RosenbaumThis is more skillful than inspired, with an image of the early west that seems largely borrowed from McCabe and Mrs. Miller.
Los Angeles TimesPeter RainerThe film ends as more of a dirge than a ballad. But occasionally it casts a forlorn spell. The meaning of Jo Monaghan's life may not really emerge in this film but its mystery lingers.
Hartford CourantMalcolm JohnsonUnitl its weirdly surreal ending, Little Jo proves a long, earnest, rather arid ride. Its life on screen here looks to be even shorter than that of Butterfly.
User ReviewAlexis HThis is one the best little westerns most people have probably never heard of. I saw it when it came out and watched it again last night on DVD, and it's still just as good. I thought Suzy Amis turned in a fabulous performance, and the story is fascinating.
User Reviewdavid tA brilliant alternative Western based loosely on a true story. I have a book with the story of Josephine Monaghan and the movie really took a great story and made movie magic with it. Everyone in the movie is superb, and if you can't believe Suzy Amis could play a guy, then you need to see the photo of Josephine, who was apparently only 5 feet tall, blonde, and very feminine, but managed to fool everyone that she was a guy for almost 40 years!
User ReviewAlison OVIDEO This movie tells the heartbreaking story of Josephine Monaghan, a well-heeled society lady of the American pioneer days who was cast out from her hometown when she bore a child out of wedlock. Based on an amalgamation of true stories about women masquerading as men in the Old West, Josephine becomes Little Jo soon after discovering that her career prospects as a lone female ranged from prostitute to bar wench. While the female-male transformation isn't as convincing as say Hilary Swank's in Boys Don't Cry, in the lead role Suzy Amis convinces as a woman trying to carve out a new life for herself in the frontier town of Ruby City. Sir Ian McKellen puts in an appearance as evil landlord Percy Corcoran and Heather Graham has a minor role as a serving wench, but Bad Girls this aint. The two hour running time breezes by until we reach the point in her tale where the undertaker discovers her secret, to the amusement (female townsfolk) and chagrin (male townsfolk) of the residents of Ruby City.
User ReviewJeff-Geoff FWonderful little movie that I urge anyone to see. Slow moving, but Suzy Amis is a revelation and the film is beautifully shot. Love the score.
User ReviewWhitney BI wasn't expecting this to be as good as it was. Very fair examination of issues in the Western.
User ReviewMaria NI thought this very good, a little unconventional, but loved it.
User ReviewBruce BAn obscure gem. Great directing and acting, though the script is pretty messy in its structure.
