His parents, Fred (Larry Miller) and Doreen (Cheri Oteri), are leaving for a honeymoon in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, so they are too busy to attend to his problems. His sister, Tiffany (Allison Mack), is distracted by her cell phone, and grandmother Mommo (Lily Tomlin) is obsessed with U.F.O.s and aliens. Lucas is constantly being beat up by the neighborhood bully, Steve (Myles Jeffrey). Because he cannot fight back, he takes out his anger on an anthill in his front yard. He kicks it, stomps it, squirts it with his water gun, and floods it with a hose. This terrifies the ants, who call Lucas "The Destroyer". One wizard ant, known as Zoc (Nicolas Cage), being a hopeful and adventurous type, is trying to solve this dilemma. He tries to devise a magic potion that he believes will solve all their problems. As the plan to shrink Lucas down to their size with a magic potion and forcing him to live like an ant within the colony - an astonishing new world opens up to him. Lucas learns first-hand the value of friendship and teamwork, ultimately leading the ants in an effort to save their colony from annihilation. | NewsweekChristy LemireThe Ant Bully is never less than colorful and high-energy. But it's hard to shake the feeling that we've all gone up this hill before. |
Dispatch-Tribune NewspapersSteve CrumSo well animated, voiced, written, and directed, it defines itself as one of the best animated flicks this summer, rightfully standing beside 'Monster House' and 'Cars.'
Christian Science MonitorM. K. TerrellThe art direction and animation are superb, but it may be worth the extra bucks to see it in IMAX 3-D.
EmanuelLevy.ComEmanuel LevyThis uneven high-concept animation begs for ideological comparison with the superior Antz, also set in ants colony. If in 1998 Woody Allen fought for freedom and non-conformity, this hero gets civic lessons about togetherness and collective welfare.
Reeling ReviewsLaura Clifford...too many similarities to previous animations like Antz and the recent Over the Hedge often give The Ant Bully the feel of an also-ran.
New York Daily NewsJack MathewsWhile "Cars" may have the most elaborate CGI effects of the season, and "Monster House?" the most original character (the house), The Ant Bully can lay claim to the most entertaining story and most rewarding ending.
Seattle TimesMoira MacDonaldThe Ant Bully isn't a kid classic, but it's an enjoyable diversion until the next ant movie comes along.
Entertainment WeeklyLisa SchwarzbaumAn effortlessly clever animated confection.
Seattle Post-IntelligencerSean AxmakerIt may be too intense at times for wee ones, but kids of 5 and up testing the limits of their independence in the big world should relate to Lucas, dig the crazy insect world and embrace the imagination behind the colorful adventure.
Sun Publications (Chicago, IL)Josh LarsenKids have always had a love-hate relationship with ants...and The Ant Bully ingeniously explores this childhood inconsistency.
