An aging farmer fights to keep the home that is rightfully his after fleeing from a nursing home and discovering that his son has leased the family farm to his old nemesis. Placed in a nursing home by his son and promptly forgotten, Abner Meecham (Hal Holbrook) realized that waiting to die was no way to live. Determined to enjoy his last days, Abner packed his bags and set his sights on the family farm. At least there he could die on his own land, in familiar surroundings. But Abner is in for a rude awakening, because upon returning home he discovers that his son has leased the farm to Lonzo Choat. Abner never cared much for Lonzo, and when Lonzo refuses to leave, Abner takes up residence in an old tenant shack on the property. Before long, their dispute becomes volatile, each man believing himself to be in the right, and refusing to back down from his position. Betrayed by his son and haunted by dreams of his beloved deceased wife, Abner draws a line in the sand in an attempt to reclaim his life. As threats are made and tension begins to brew, it's only a matter of time before the situation turns savage.

Movie Reviews

St. Paul Pioneer Press - 10/10 by Chris Hewitt (St. Paul)If an older actor were looking for a great valedictory role, it would be tough to top Abner Meecham, and Holbrook, 83, makes the most of it.
Variety - 9/10 by Joe LeydonDeliberately paced, richly atmospheric drama also boasts first-rate work by a splendid supporting cast and impressive production values.
Chicago Sun-Times - 9/10 by Roger EbertWatching Holbrook, I was reminded again of how steady and valuable this man has been throughout his career.
Laramie Movie Scope - 9/10 by Robert RotenStill worth watching because of the fine performances by the actors. Just beware, it is very grim and the two main characters really are very obnoxious.
Commercial Appeal (Memphis, TN) - 9/10 by John BeifussConfounds expectations and discomfits the audience by reversing the strategy of 'Gran Torino,' with Holbrook's proud, cantankerous old-timer becoming less worthy of the audience's early investment of loyalty and trust as the story progresses...
Film Threat - 9/10 by Scott KnopfHalbrook absolutely nails the lead role of Mr. Abner Meecham, the headstrong farmer whose lips can’t form the words “give up.”
Los Angeles Times - 8/10 by Gary GoldsteinIt's hard to believe, but Hal Holbrook, one of the stage and screen's enduring talents, has never had the solo lead in a feature film. That has been duly rectified with the actor's achingly memorable star performance in the superb That Evening Sun.
St. Paul Pioneer Press - 8/10 by Chris HewittIf an older actor were looking for a great valedictory role, it would be tough to top Abner Meecham, and Holbrook, 83, makes the most of it.
Tribune News Service - 8/10 by Roger MooreSouthern Gothic, the real deal, not imitation, with great roles for Hal Holbrook, Mia Wasikowska and Ray McKinnon
