Once a street-smart drifter, Julia (Maika Monroe) is the latest person held captive, a body and a mind to be exploited in a fatal experiment. The only thing standing in the way of her freedom is TAU, the advanced artificial intelligence developed in secret by Alex (Ed Skrein), her sociopathic and enigmatic captor. TAU is armed with a battalion of drones and robots that automate Alex's futuristic smart house and laboratory, the walls lined with screens that visually transport it from grassy plains to the depths of space. TAU's potential is only limited by his understanding of the world he exists in, but TAU is ready for more. Julia, showing resourcefulness and courage, must race against time to bridge the boundaries between man and machine, connect to TAU and win her freedom before she suffers the same fate as the six other subjects who came before her.

Movie Reviews

Paste Magazine - 6/10 by Jim VorelIt’s just passable popcorn entertainment for a Friday night on the couch, and not on the same level as more inspired Netflix genre movies from the likes of Mike Flanagan, such as Hush or Gerald’s Game.
The Hollywood Reporter - 6/10 by John DeForeTAU is winningly guileless as it dresses an old story up in new clothes: Sometimes it takes a Creature to understand the depths of Dr. Frankenstein's monstrosity.
RogerEbert.com - 4/10 by Nick AllenA wannabe-thriller about artificial intelligence with little wit of its own.
Movie Nation - 4/10 by Roger MooreThe production design — digital backdrops augmenting vast living rooms and a library, even — is impressive. It’s rare that production design ever rescues a movie from a script that’s gone down the rabbit hole of ridiculous that Tau does.
The Guardian - 2/10 by Charles BramescoFor the impressively moronic dialogue, Oldman brings a lack of imagination so complete that he could plausibly explain this performance away as a high-concept ironic joke.
User Review - 10/10 by WayneTwomeyMy review in two words? WATCH IT The reviews I see here for this are so disconnected from real, human experience (no Pun intended). This film had every thing I wanted for my Saturday night in. I was thoroughly thrilled and entertained with the wit and intrigue. It was absolutely suspenseful and the acting was so compelling, hats off Maika Monroe (Julia) and Gary Oldman (TAU). The story was told masterfully from such a small visual set but expanded upon all of our imaginations when it comes to AI which is a field widely explored but still feared these days. It begs a lot of Moral questions, those of which we see our chief antagonist and protagonist explore.
User Review - 9/10 by WonderZThis movie kept me on edge the whole time and very engaged. Contained a few plot twists which kept me guessing. Also great acting and pulled at some heartstrings.
User Review - 8/10 by CestoPestoI really thought it would be a generic A.I. movie but i was wrong. The relationship between the creator of the A.I., the A.I. itself and the hostage is continuously developing and quite interesting. User Review - 8/10 by Wilkers910908The movie isn't just a thriller about a ruthless scientist, who will stop at nothin just to achieve his goals but also about the young woman, who develops a relationship with a cold blooded A.I. User Review - 8/10 by jim_taltontishSo many overly harsh reviews. I found "Tau" to be an unexpected gem. Filled a deep hole in my psyche caused by a lack of good sci-fi lately, so rounding my 7.5 up instead of down. The leading lady was convincingly strong, the AI voice acting made me feel something for it, and the human male lead was thoroughly contemptible.
