Movie Reviews

The Globe and Mail (Toronto) - 9/10 by Stephen GodfreyThere are moments of jaw-dropping inspiration, and many that are just impenetrably odd. But this is immensely winning for the rawness alone.
Chicago Reader - 8/10 by Jonathan RosenbaumWhatever else you might say about this weird, creepy, and funny independent item by Guy Maddin, it's certainly different.
The A.V. Club - 8/10 by Noel MurrayThe filmmaker self-consciously borrows from dozens of sources, including radio dramas, Our Gang shorts, hygiene films, school plays, stag pictures, Universal horror, ethnographic documentaries, and the indie weirdness of John Waters and David Lynch.
Chicago Tribune - 8/10 by Dave KehrAn original and insinuating black comedy from Winnipeg, Canada, where something very strange seems to be going on. The pastiche is nearly perfect, played with an utter sincerity that makes it impossible to tell just where the jokes are coming from.
Time Out - 6/10 by Geoff AndrewThere's a thin line between weird and strange, and Maddin's debut falls just the wrong side.
User Review - 10/10 by Jack SOne of the only Good Canadian films around.
User Review - 10/10 by Zaar DMy favourtie film by my favourite Canadian director.
User Review - 10/10 by A RGuy Maddin's first film is a bizarre trip to a hospital I hope I never find myself in.
User Review - 10/10 by D FPicked this one up from the local library. Thought it was great, the feel, the set, even the awkward acting made it fit all together...
User Review - 10/10 by Adam PWow, what a film. I saw it cause Guy painted my old wooden house in Winnepeg while he was still a house painter and we got chatting and he told me about a film he had made. Later, I read that it played in New York for a year... I can believe that... cause there aren't too many things that can keep my attention like the black face bits or those young nurses walking in and out of the room, and especially the Icelandic story telling and fish carving and the naive love story between the heavy fellow and his girl. Wow.
