Film Frenzy - 5/10 by Matt BrunsonAs a fan of Hammer, as a fan of Peter Cushing, as a fan of director Terence Fisher, and as a fan of Robin Hood, this one should have easily clicked for me -- instead, it's a rather tired rendition of the saga.
User Review - 8/10 by Jeremy NA visually impressive version of the Robin Hood story from Hammer Studios. Richard Greene is suitably cast as Robin Hood (he also played the role on television) and Peter Cushing is a wonderfully evil Sheriff of Nottingham.
User Review - 8/10 by Greg WThe Adventures of Robin Hood ran on ITV for 143 episodes between 1955 and 1959, it was a success at home and abroad. Hammer bought the rights to make a film, and called upon Hammer veteran Terrence Fisher to direct this film. Filmed in a green and luscious Ireland, it's a lavish and beautiful looking adventure with a good cast as well. It's also one of the better Robin Hood adaptations on film too, and it looks like some serious money was spent on this film too. When the Sheriff of Nottingham (Peter Cushing) is looking to confiscate the estate of a soldier who fought in the Crusades, the Archbishop of Canterbury, Hubert Walter (Jack Gwillim) speaks out against the Sheriff's plans, and the Sheriff plans to kill him. The Sheriff sends Earl of Newark (Richard Pasco) and Lord Melton (Oliver Reed) out to do it, but they try and trick Robin Hood (Richard Greene) to do it, but when Robin Hood learns of who his target is, he goes about trying to protect the Archbishop, and defeat the Sheriff. It's a good adventure film with a good cast, Greene reprises his role of Robin Hood from the TV production, while Cushing hams it up as the Sheriff. Razz But, there is much to admire with this adaptation, and there is a lot of fun to be had too.
User Review - 6/10 by Krista GIt was the 60's. They had trouble with movies like this. You get to the end and you think to yourself "Did I zone out? Or was there really no plot?"
User Review - 6/10 by Christopher BIt's a Hammer Film! But not one of their better ones. At least there were some interesting & original plot devices even if the pacing and cinematography were little better than an amateur production.
User Review - 6/10 by Peter HA slightly different slant on the Legend of Robin Hood but still has that traditional feel to it all. Good v evil and Good wins and gets the woman as well.
User Review - 6/10 by Kevin RYou're acting within the law and hiding behind it. King Richard has gone missing and the Sheriff of Nottingham is blocking off some roads in England and preparing to make a strategic move to take over the countryside. Robin Hood tries to paralyze his efforts long enough for reinforcements that back his king to arrive and shutdown the sheriff. "I see you can shoot straight. Now shoot crooked." Terence Fisher, director of Horror of Dracula, Curse of Frankenstein, The Mummy, Dracula: Prince of Darkness, Island of Terror, and The Gorgon, delivers Sword of Sherwood Forest. The storyline is a slightly different take on Robin Hood. The feel was great and the acting was above average. The cast includes Peter Cushing, Richard Greene, Nigel Green, Jack Gwillim, and Niall McGinnis. "We're all criminals according to you." This was recommended to me by Verizon Fios so I DVR'd it off cable. This was pretty good and entertaining. This wasn't my favorite Robin Hood movie but it was fun to see Peter Cushing in this genre. This is worth viewing once. "Outlaws have their uses." Grade: C+/B-
User Review - 4/10 by Paul CReally rather poor early Hammer effort, badly-dated. Peter Cushing tries his best.
User Review - 4/10 by Paul DThis mythical English hero yarn is a bit of a yorn. There are better Hood's than this, including Costner!
User Review - 4/10 by Jon ARather poor Robin Hood tale which plays like an episode of a TV series. Not great in either the script or acting departments, though Cushing and Reed are their usual class acts. Fairly harmless costumed romp.
