7M PicturesKevin CarrIt's a cute little story of mistaken identity, budding relationships and potential sexual awakening. It's cute, and it's not meant to be anything more.
Aisle SeatMike McGranaghanSolid performances keep it entertaining, even if one does occasionally chuckle at the outdated discussions of sexual mores.
VarietyVariety StaffNorman Krasna's screenplay, from his Broadway legiter, doesn't really get rolling until it has virtually marked time for almost an hour, but once it gets up this head of steam the entire complexion of the picture seems to change.
New York TimesBosley CrowtherLet's just say that Peter Tewksbury's direction makes the whole thing move like clockwork on the screen, where it is done in delicious Metrocolor, and that, naturally, no one gets hurt.
User ReviewLanning :When my non-flixster movie fan friends were sharing their Top 10 for 2007 lists, I got into a discussion with Cheryl, a woman who knows more about film than I could ever hope to fathom. We finally decided that there just weren't enough 2007 films to dig up a "top" ten, so we decided to include some "older" ones we'd viewed either for the first time, or for the first time in a while. We both coincidentally agreed that Wong Kar Wai's 2046 should be on the list, and that Fellini's La Strada was possibly the 2007 great view for all time for us both. Cheryl said, eyes closed and massaging her temples, "Gee, I hope I'm not getting to that age where I start saying, 'the only good ones are the old ones.'" She's fifteen years older than I am, but I give you my sworn word that she is not anywhere near getting old enough to say that old films are the best. Flixsters, this 1963 movie is wonderful. Really. I'm not just saying that because I'm an old guy. I promise. Yes, there are hokey moments. Hokey with a capital H. As Walter might say, you can tell from the dialog that this is a movie adapted from a play. It is very clever at times, dialog driven, and very Hokey, as I say, at times. We're talking 1963 here, flixster friends, but romance, and more specifically romantic comedy, when it's done well, is truly timeless. This is what happens, no matter when a movie is made, when you get four very smart, very camera savvy actors to click together. And click they most certainly do. Cliff Robertson, Jane Fonda, Rod Taylor, and Robert Culp are chemistry dynamite here together. A true pleasure to experience, and it's climbing into my Top 100 right now.
User ReviewMary Jane P"And so they were married and went to Japan for their honeymoon, and had three lovely daughters, who grew up and were lectured by their father and of course me, their uncle, on the nice things that can happen to a girl, if she remains virtuous, even on a rainy Sunday in New York." Charming, sweet, love story that even your little girl could still watch, with Peter Nero music and an ending that is so romantic it makes my teeth ache.
User ReviewAshley HJust enjoyed this movie with my hubby. Glass of wine and a bowl of popcorn. Pure bliss. Enjoy!
User ReviewKhema WA really good romantic movie, that you no longer find nowadays.
User ReviewScott RBasically, Netflix & Chill. This couldn't be made today. Sad. Fonda does a good job playing a sensible human being. So she sees her bro's a sleaze and decides because of it to become one herself? Ah, old Jane is back. Her fiancee is Seahawks QB. Incredibly well written. A charming and delightful film. I dont understand where backus was when he talked on the phone. He should have been in Denver as that flight already left. but they acted as though they were on their way to denver. couldve been a stop, but a stop is never mentioned. quibble. while i appreciate the message, not sure how i feel about the subject matter being brought up. fonda is like a 60s miley cyrus. the before bed kiss may have been premature. is the message that trying is all that counts?
User ReviewJennifer HDuring the run of Sunday in New York, an audience member may find them self in a tug of war strain. The tug of war is not between good and evil... per-say; it's more between the men who represent good and evil. If you are a decent person with morals your 'thumbs up' would go to Cliff Robertson at the beginning after he insists to Jane Fonda that men only find pure women the attractive kind. Jane, hardly content with being the only virgin left in Albany, NY, insists that men only want to have sex and possibly marry. At this point, Cliff swears that he's never slept with a girl... ahem, lie...and then makes plans to meet his lady for a get together of his own and our 'thumbs up' becomes a 'thumbs down.' Jane meets Rod Taylor, through an unfortunate circumstance, of course, and the two laugh, leave, and try very hard not to run into the other but end up meeting anyway. Rod is a nice fellow and our thumbs go up for him. As the two are walking, a rain storm comes, soaking the two to the bone as they run to the apartment. Jane realizes that she is alone... in an apartment... with a handsome man... and the wet clothes should come off before pneumonia. Well, one thing leads to another and a kiss becomes several kisses. Our 'Rod Thumbs Up' is now a 'Rod Thumbs Down.' Now, don't fret. Jane wasn't actually going to pull through with sex with a stranger. Thumbs up for Rod. But Rod does insult Jane for being a virgin. Thumbs down for Rod. ENTER: Jane's ex-boyfriend wanting to propose. Rod hides the fact that he is a stranger by pretending to be the brother (Thumbs down) and Cliff walks in absolutely confused by what he sees. Somehow Jane and Rod will have to explain to EX that Rod is not the brother, Cliff is, and Jane and Rod will have to explain the course of events that led Rod to the apartment and the failed attempt at you-know-what. Cliff will have to give up and accept the fact that the woman he is 'not sleeping with currently' is the woman he is crazy about and will have to propose to (thumbs up) after she's traveled on plane to four different cities (thumbs down) and Jane will have to say goodbye to Rod for forever because he is just a stranger she met on the street and she couldn't possibly love him... I feel that, like me, you'll be giving both boys thumbs up.
