EmanuelLevy.ComEmanuel LevyThis screen version of Tennessee Williams's noted play is poorly directed (it' still theater), but it's well acted by Geraldine Page
User ReviewByron BObscure favorite. Great rendition of Williams stage play. Page is brilliant.
User ReviewJim HNot as good as Night of the Iguana or Baby Doll but amazing none the less. Tn Williams is a true genius- his work is moral, mystical. Geraldine Paige who was also in the broadway revival role of Alma makes the movie. Some really great moments here and there and then the last couple acts are great.
User ReviewPrivate UThis is a wonderful film, captivating and brimming with unrequited yearning. Of course, it comes across a little melodramatic, but the story tells of an attraction complex and relevant, examining the soul-body dichotomy and personal egoistic love vs. altruistic compromise. Also, in the tradition of W. Somerset Maugham, it sheds light on the fascinating habit of women being smitten and ultimately tarnished by the desire for rugged rebels. There are some beautifully shot scenes, great performances and sweeping, sensual music. It's my personal favourite Tennessee Williams play and well worth watching.
User ReviewJason HGeraldine Page was a hit on stage in Tennessee Williams Sweet Bird of Youth, but on film her performance in this Tennessee Williams-film is far superior - and so is the film. With the exception of her Oscar-winning performance in A TRIP TO BOUNTIFUL this is the best thing she has ever done and she as well as veteran actress Una Merkel received Oscar-nomination for their poignant and poetic acting in this film version of very underrated Tennesse Wiiliams play.
User ReviewShauna S"I was more afraid to touch your soul than you were afraid to touch my body." A masterpiece of angst.
User ReviewDarryl Ca lyrical adaptation of one of williams' best works. the language is, for the most part, intact and the design elements enhance the look and deliver the period quite well. of course, tiffin , moreno and harvey are wearing elvis and priscilla hair but that is a minor point to quibble. the score is one of bernstein's best--right in there with 'to kill a mockingbird'. and the last scene at the fountain as alma gives in to her fleshly side of her nature, is breathtaking. page is in great form and holliman gives her great support. as does harvey, merkel and the rest of the cast. save tiffin. i don't know. too bubbly for my taste.
User ReviewEvan HSuch a wonderful movie filled with excellent performances!
User ReviewSean CI always like the underlying tension or fraying sanity of the characters in Tennessee Williams' plays. I have liked the other adaptations or his plays more, but this one still has something to it.
User ReviewCheryl SSuper deep. Very sad. I love anything Tennessee Williams.
