EmanuelLevy.ComEmanuel LevyIn Frank Borzage's melodrama, Janet Gaynor's turn as a poor woman who resorts to prostitution must have impressed the Oscar voters for she won Best Actress that year
Antagony & EcstasyTim BraytonA well-made movie that can't quite decide exactly what kind of movie it would like to be.
User ReviewJames HJanet Gaynor + Charles Farrell + Frank Borzage = great.
User ReviewElise SLovely silent film starring Charles Farrell and Janet Gaynor, who I like more every time I see her. She gives the film a touch of innocence, which makes it very enchanting.
User ReviewCarreh RBefore sound cinema was all about the visuals and telling a story through emotions and expression. Frank Borage directed Street Angel purposefully to minimize the use of inter titles and to maximize the story telling through the visuals. This film is high melodrama and if one can see it as such and not judge it then one can get an awful lot out of it. The blurred images rendering the actors closeups' dream like and ethereal and transcending their love into the realm of the spiritual.
User ReviewPriya Pbeautiful movie and actress. The movie info here is wrong, I think he didn't see the film
User ReviewStephen HI think the more I see of Borzage's work, the more I enjoy him. His choices here are particularly inspired - one shot of Farrell looking on in despair while the silhouettes of a crowd mills past is very striking. Might be the best of Gaynor's triple-Oscar-winning performances of that year. Perhaps not quite as impressive as Seventh Heaven overall, and the story is decidedly simple and thin, but it's a beautifully crafted piece of work.
User ReviewCourtney SThe quality of the print I saw wasn't amazing, but this was still a sweet and wistful little romance, with some very effective scenes.
