Ozus' World Movie ReviewsDennis SchwartzAn enticing atmospheric ghost story set in a lonely swamp.
User ReviewTravis JSuperlative American horror film with plainly evident German Expressionist roots. The action is mostly confined to a single foggy swamp set. Tree branches fill the foreground of most shots. Supremely spooky. The camera tracks the ferry back and forth across the swamp, granting the film a lulling cadence. Director Frank Wisbar had filmed this same story, as "F¤hrmann Maria", 10 years earlier in his native Germany. How I'd love to see that!
User ReviewTristan PHighly effective, atmospheric povert row horror. Some say it's overrated, but compare this with the average George Zucco PRC flick and I think you'll agree this deserves any praise it gets.
User ReviewMichael TInteresting and atmospheric but creeky old story about a wrongly hanged man and his vengence from beyond the grave. Directed by Frank Wisbar, Strangler of the Swamp is his second take on the same story that he directed ten years earlier in Germany under the title Fahrmann Maria/Ferryman Maria. The voluptuous Rosemary La Plance is strategically costumed in a free-flowing blouse to serve as the main attention grabber, aside from the great mood and effective camera work. Slow but worthwhile semi-classic from PRC.
User ReviewMara BThis short-and-sweet, mildly creepy B-movie has plenty of atmosphere with its swirling mist, bullfrogs croaking, and swamp muck, and the characters are fairly appealing. The movie does what it sets out to do: tell a ghost story with no frills.
User ReviewCharlene KCheesy movie with bad acting, but a decent movie to watch to get you in the Halloween spirit.
