Movie Reviews

Washington Post - 8/10 by Gary ArnoldWhile all of the acting is top-notch, Reynolds steals the show with his underplaying and understanding of the role.
Antagony & Ecstasy - 8/10 by Tim BraytonA better story than you'd probably expect for a film of this kind of this vintage.
DVDTalk.com - 8/10 by Scott WeinbergA whole lot better than most of the divorce-centric comedies of this ilk, mainly because it focuses on the characters and not the act of divorce itself.
The New York Times - 7/10 by Janet MaslinStarting Over depicts an abandoned man in all his misery, and still manages to be fast and funny while it breaks new ground.
Chicago Sun-Times - 5/10 by Roger EbertStarting Over actually feels sort of embarrassed at times, maybe because characters are placed in silly sitcom situations and then forced to say lines that are supposed to be revealing and real. When the gags do work, and occasionally they do, it's more a matter of acute social observation than good writing.
User Review - 10/10 by Twinkle JGood - but been awhile since I've seen it.
User Review - 10/10 by Bradley HPerhaps it's my age, but this film is one of the funniest movies of all time. Jill Clayburgh does NOT try to be Diane Keaton in Annie Hall. She is herself as a perfectly UPSET divorcee who constantly who seems to be constantly immersed in situaltions so hysterical, I laugh out loud. My stomach hurts by the end. Also, let's not forget the wonderful Charles Durning in a most memorable scene inside Bloomingdales, where, by the way, we catch a glimpse of a future "Star" without a line to be spoken: Kevin Bacon. It annoys me when people compare this to Annie Hall. There is none except that they are both GREAT romantic comedies. And that's where it begins and that's where it ends. I am no Burt Reynolds' fan, but he played his part perfectly as did his co-star ex-wife, Candace Bergen. People WAKE UP. Especially if you are a Baby Boomer. If you haven't seen it, you MUST put Starting Over on your cinema Bucket List. ASAP. We don't have that many years left to see this wonderful film.
User Review - 10/10 by Lucas MWhat a nice movie. But Reynolds, Jill Clayburgh, Candice Bergen - all of them charming.
User Review - 10/10 by deep dI'm not a big Burt Reynolds fan but give this movie a try and you might be surprised by what a wonderful performance he gives. And I cannot rave enough about Jill Clayburgh and Candice Bergen, who are absolutely wonderful (both were nominated for Oscars). I think this is Ms. Clayburgh's best performance--she is so funny and you really care about her insecure character. And Ms. Bergen really gets to display her comic chops as she plays a self-centered aspiring "singer"--her music moments are priceless. Such a witty script--and if you know and love Charles Durning, Frances Sternhagen and Austin Pendleton--who show up in supporting roles--be sure not to miss this one!
User Review - 8/10 by Matthew SA forgotten but extremely well-crafted film from the 1970's. For a brief period Burt Reynolds was becoming an exceptional actor. Candice Bergen manages to almost completely steal this movie with a relatively small role.
