Friend Tim Winthrop asks criminal lawyer and amateur detective Clay Dalzell to find his girl, Alice, who disappeared a year earlier without a trace. When they go to the theater with Clay's would-be fiancée, Donna Mantin, Tim recognizes the star, Mary Smith, as his girl, and yells "Alice," after which she bolts from the stage and disappears once again. Reporter Tommy Tennant knows why she bolted, but before he can tell Clay the reason, he is shot dead and Clay is wounded slightly in Clay's apartment. The many suspects include Roger Classon and his wife, Jerry, who are looking for Alice to testify and save Roger's friend from the electric chair for a murder he didn't commit; Abe Ohlman, the producer of Mary's show; and gangster Jimmy Kinland who seems to know more than he's telling. It's up to Clay, with the help of Donna, to trap the murderer and find Alice.

Ozus' World Movie ReviewsDennis SchwartzGood escapist entertainment mixing snappy dialogue with pistol shots and cocktails.
User ReviewShana GI really wish they would hurry up and put this on DVD so I can buy it. I love this movie.
User ReviewKatie ROh man, by far my FAVORITE Thin Man knockoff. Ginger Rogers and William Powell are so perfect together. They really should have made more films together.
User ReviewGreg W'the thin man' minus myrna loy and add in Ginger Rogers
User ReviewAllan CAn early Ginger Rogers film but she is a distant second in the billing to William Powell who is dominant in his efforts to solve a murder mystery, one that isn't the strongest of stories but one that is tenable in creating an entertaining movie.
User ReviewNik EA Thin Man knock-off with William Powell's Clay Dalzell expertly aping his very own Nick Charles (well, he ought to be able to rip off his own character, right?). Ginger Rogers stands in for Myrna Loy, playing a spunkier, less refined Nora. The central mystery ends up being nothing special, but these films were always more about the interplay between Powell and his lady, and with that in mind it's a perfectly amusing diversion sure to be of interest to the Thin Man fan.
User ReviewBill BEssentially The Thin Man lite, this is a watchable outing for William Powell not quite playing Nick Charles. Ginger Rogers (who I don't know that I've seen in a film before this one) is great as his love interest, but considering the material I found myself looking around for Myrna Loy from time to time out of habit. Worth a look.
User ReviewAmanda CThe more I watch films with William Powell, the more I like him. His sophisticated and cynical portrayals are engaging.
User ReviewSteven VA Thin-Man movie without Myrna Loy, which is what this is for all intents and purposes, just isn't as good as the real thing. Still, it's a nice bit of 30s mystery fluff.
