Full Plot Details

Sun Ra--space-age prophet, pharoanic jester, shaman-philosopher and avant-jazz keyboardist/bandleader--lands his spaceship in Oakland, having been presumed lost in space for a few years. With Black Power on the rise, Ra disembarks and proclaims himself "the alter-destiny." He holds a myth-vs.-reality rap session with black inner-city youth at a rec center, threatening "to chain you up and take you with me, like they did you in Africa," if they resist his plea to go to outer space. He duels at cards with The Overseer, a satanic overlord, with the fate of the black race at stake. Ra wins the right to a world concert, which features great performance footage of the Arkestra. Agents sent by the Overseer attempt to assassinate Ra, but he vanishes, rescues his people, and departs in his spaceship from the exploding planet Earth.

Meanwhile, in a galaxy far away, Sun Ra has found a beautiful planet ripe for colonization and sets out to wrest the youth from the Overseer and transmolecularly teleport them all to this new world. But will they go? 'Overseer' was the slave-days term for the master's puppet slave appointed as work-boss over the 'employees', and Harriet Tubman famously said she might have freed more slaves had she been able to convince them that they WERE slaves. Ra discovers its one thing to get them out, and quite another to make them want to go. So ... which will it be? Stay here on Earth with pills and girls and gold to break the boredom? Or will you sign up with Outerspaceways Incorporated?

User Review - 10/10 by Adam CEveryone needs to see this film, not least for the Jive talking and the 70s pimp fashion and bizarre space outfits and intergactic jazz, and Sun-ra's ridiculously unflappable deadpan acting. That's just it - he's not acting. He actually believes that he can fly through space on his cosmic vibes, and so do you by the end of the film!
