MovieholeClint MorrisA powerful piece of filmmaking. Gere and Foster are as immaculate as always.
Hartford CourantMalcolm JohnsonSommersby has everything to succeed. There's just one minor problem in this Americanized remake of The Return of Martin Guerre: Who can believe Richard Gere and Jodie Foster as a Tennessee Ashley and Scarlett?
Independent (UK)Adam Mars-JonesHis (Amiel's) direction is full-blooded and unafraid of sentiment, but he reins in the film's epic possibilities, which could easily have bogged things down.
Ozus' World Movie ReviewsDennis SchwartzLacks whatever magical ingredient there is that makes a film a moving experience and instead settles for being an adequate but not a remarkable achievement.
Deseret News (Salt Lake City)Chris HicksThe cast is uniformly good, including Gere in the title role. But it's Foster who really glows here, giving her character a sense of depth and innocence that makes the entire unlikely premise more palatable.
Spirituality and PracticeFrederic and Mary Ann BrussatA winning and soul-stirring exploration of the spiritual meaning of one man's sacrificial death.
Chicago Sun-TimesRoger EbertA square peg pounded into a round hole -- or, more exactly, a medieval European story that has been unsuccessfully updated to the period of the American Civil War.
Laramie Movie ScopeRobert RotenThe story idea is an interesting one, but it doesn't quite pan out in the end. There are too many unanswered questions and unresolved conflicts.
Washington PostDesson ThomsonIf you're looking for a picturesque romance -- with a little intrigue on the side -- you could do worse than Sommersby.
User ReviewRaechel BA fantastic story that keeps you at the same level of understanding as the characters.. Is this Jack Sommersby? or an intruder?. It's really well written & man, I really enjoyed it.. Richard and Jodie do a excellent job playing out their parts. It even brought out a tear in me by the end of it. :D I didn't expect it to be so good.
