During World War II, a soldier is hit by a grenade that deforms his face and leaves him with amnesia. Sometime later, he is recovered and learns that his name is George Taylor and he is discharged from the Army. He finds a letter written by a man named Larry Cravat who would be his pal and he goes to Los Angeles to seek out Larry Cravat to find his identity. He goes to a bank, a hotel, a Turkish bath, and a night-club following leads. He is beaten up by Hubert, the henchman of Anzelmo who dumps him at the front door of the singer Christy Smith who works in a night-club. George tells his story to her and Christy decides to help him. She calls her boss and friend Mel Phillips who schedules a lunch with his friend Police Lt. Donald Kendall and Christy. They learn that Larry Cravat was a private investigator who somehow received $2,000,000 three years ago in Germany from a Nazi who was immediately deceased. Then George receives a tip to go to the Terminal Dock where he meets Anzelmo who explains that Larry Cravat is wanted by the police for the murder of a man at the dock to keep the money. Larry has disappeared and Anzelmo believes George Taylo is the man who was with him and probably the killer. George's further investigation finds that a man named Conroy was a witness to the crime, but he was hit and run by a truck and is interned at the Lambeth Sanatorium. When George meets Conroy, he realizes that the man was stabbed but he tells where he hid the suitcase with the money before dying. Now George is close to solving the mystery.

Village Voice - 8/10 by Michael AtkinsonJoseph L. Mankiewicz's nervous nightmare (made in his first year of directing) isn't an all-hallowed member of the noir canon -- it's fairly slick, and Mankiewicz has little or no existentialist cred. But it sings the school's black-hearted lament.
Filmcritic.com - 7/10 by Christopher NullIt's smashingly photographed in the classic styles of the genre.
Time Out - 6/10 by Tom MilneOut of this familiar premise, Mankiewicz has fashioned a classic film noir.
User Review - 10/10 by Jonathan TThis is is a 1940s classic. Well acted and with lots of suspense. I saw for first time here at Flixster, and enjoyed, even when it is in B&W.
User Review - 8/10 by Art SHodiak, Conte and a host of Great Supporting Players in a Class-A Film Noir--Classy Nocturne!!
User Review - 8/10 by Blake PGeorge Taylor (Hodiak) wakes up in an army hospital with no memory of his past. When he regains health, he looks at his personal belongings, and finds a scathing letter from a woman, and another letter signed by "Larry Cravat". Determined to find out more about himself, Taylor travels to the city and meets lounge singer Christy Smith (Guild) and her friend Mel (Conte), and they both help him find out more. The deeper he gets into the maze however, Taylor finds that Cravat stole millions worth of cash a few years earlier, and murdered somebody to get it. The thing is however, things are going to get worse ... Famed director Joseph L. Mankiewicz was just getting started in Hollywood in 1946, and "Somewhere in the Night" was his third film overall and his first film for 20th Century Fox. Seeing the other two, I can say that "Somewhere in the Night" is by far my favorite. The main idea for the movie is definitely not at all original, but the plot twists and suspense make this B movie even more memorable than some of the A crime pictures. The film is just filled to the brim with snappy dialogue, fun but heart-pounding suspense, and great performances to boot, especially from Nancy Guild (literally a one-contract actress) as the female lead, the tough as nails femme fatale Phyllis played by Woode, and Hodiak has gotta get chops for carrying a film so well for one of the few times he's ever had to. Sure, "Somewhere in the Night" can be a bit predictable if you think about it too much, but if you just let yourself go into this top-notch thriller, you'll be in for a very special treat. I'm not sure if I've seen such a good B-movie in a long time. Recommended.
User Review - 8/10 by Enrico COne of the best american noir movies of the 40's, though when it came out it has been considered just a minor work. The classic theme of the amnesiac trying to find out something about is past is developed in a visionary and surrealistic way, with a touch of irony (the Bela Lugosi-like charachter played by Kortner) that makes it a pleasure for the spectator.
User Review - 6/10 by Anthony VA noir that has a captivating beginning (WWII veteran awakes in hospital with no memory of who he is and only a collection of objects to lead him on a quest for identity) slowly comes to stall as the picture progresses. The film incorporates several twists within its narrative as the amnesic begins to learn more and more about himself and his past, little bit by little bit, and these small revelations perk our interest and help keep us watching, despite the sluggish pace of the script. Since it was also scripted by Mankiewicz there are moments of clever and witty dialog that make the proceedings go down easier. The ending does of course have a final twist, but it is sadly predictable from the very beginning and is not as effective as it could have been. Still, it's entertaining and intriguing, and the the initial mystery of his identity keeps the viewer watching.
User Review - 6/10 by Anthony SGeneric film-noir that I have a million times and also better. However, its still engrossing.
User Review - 6/10 by jay nPromising premise leads to foregone conclusion, but with some fun wandering noir action in the meantime.
