Eye for Film - 4/10 by Jennie KermodeOverall, Something Like Summer is very good at what it does, but what it does never really gets beyond the superficial.
Film Inquiry - 4/10 by Nathan OsborneThere is more to like in Something Like Summer than dislike but it doesn't make it easy: it feels sincere, but its issue with plot and characters drag it down considerably.
User Review - 10/10 by Jeff SIn a world surrounded with "straight" love stories it's refreshing to have a movie with substance speak of first love, growing up in a oppressed society and coming to terms with one's own sexual identity. The musical aspect was a great addition to keep it from looking like a higher end daytime soap opera. Typical cliches of "not exactly like the book" but it was pretty darn close. Totally understand it would have been a 3 or more hour movie if it had. If you're gay, or have an openly diverse taste for either gay or straight love stories - see it. At times it will make you cry and others it will make you feel warm inside. But no where near what the book will do to you. Bravo to the cast, film makers and of course the author.
User Review - 6/10 by Nhia TOverall, if you read the books for this film, it would make sense. I enjoyed the film because it was a realization of the characters that i loved and hated. That being said, The film had some good thing going for it such as the acting and music and even the creative way they managed to convey the leaps in years. However, the pacing of it seemed too quick. You're jumping from one emotion to another basically every 5-10 mins and by the end of it, even though you're invested in the plot and the characters, you're left wondering if that was the whole movie or if there was more to come. I get that they had to cram 10-12 years within 115 min, which caused the hasty ending, but there could be no way to fill everything into the movie, unless this was made into a television series. Overall, the film was a good and entertaining. it will have you laughing, crying, and feeling annoyed all at the same time. The musical tie-ins to the film is also an enjoyable addition that doesn't always interfere with the rest of the film. Being a fan of the book, i applaud how much information the production crew managed to put into the film.
User Review - 2/10 by Mohamed MSOMETHING LIKE SUMMER- 23% A spot in my Top 100 worst movies ever. The story is nice, however, everything else related to the movie is absurd. The sound engineering felt like something from a Disney movie. The structure jumped from 5 years to 5 years like it was nothing. the actors did have some potential which the director did not really know how to enlighten. The cinematography is annoying, with shaky cameras in stabilized shots, and camera crane shadows in some unnecessary scenes. The screenplay was rotten cheese. I repeat, the story itself is nice. The idea focuses on sensitive subjects related to love, acceptance, and fate. However, I don't think the director knows the meaning of these three words because he sure did not know how to show it. I did feel it sometimes with the actors which I think could have done so much more if directed correctly. Story wise and execution: 1.05/3.5 Acting: 0.5/2 Camera work: 0.4/2 Sound: 0.3/2 Overall Score: 1.13/5
User Review - 2/10 by Justin BIt's a shame, I absolutely love the book series, but this movie is a disaster. Everything is great and true to the spirit of the original, but two choices ruin the entire thing. First, Ben Bentley, the main character, is terribly miscast. He's grating and it made me absolutely hate the character. He's the weakest character in the movie, which consequently makes everyone else look idiotic for being in love with such a twit. It's as if Grant Davis believes he's acting in a Disney Channel movie but everyone else realizes they're in a John Hughes movie. When Davis is off-screen (which isn't often enough), everyone else in the cast gets to rise to the level the movie could've been, and it's dissapointing when he returns. They altered the other main characters to suit the film, and both Davi Santos and Ben Baur soar in the film, so you wonder why they couldn't have tweaked the Bentley character to make him worthy of their affections. You watch to see Santos and Baur duke it out for a guy that's below both of their levels. The second unfortunate choice was to turn the film into a musical. The thing is, for the most part, Davis is the only one who sings. This is probably why his whole performance feels out of sync with the rest of the cast. They're in two different movies with the same plot. Davis is in "Cabaret", everyone else is in a light-hearted "Call Me By Your Name" romance. I've read the book series multiple times and I honestly didn't recall music being that important in the book at all, so it's a complete distraction. I reiterate, I wanted to love this movie. I love the book series, and it could've been so good. But instead, it was this. Ugh. It's never good when it feels like a chore to watch a movie.
